FOR FAMILIES

READY TO PARTICIPATE? GET IN TOUCH WITH US!

Opportunity to participate! Our Lab is involved in various studies focused on different aspects of bilingual language development. Two of those many studies are MILO (Maternal Input and Language Output) and School Age Bilingual Study, which invite Spanish English bilingual children, parents, and school-age children to participate. MILO study involves children from 24 to 36 months (who hear the Spanish language from any person at home) with their mother for 3 visits to our lab or remote (at your home via Zoom). For participating you will be paid $75-100 per visit. Bilingual School-Age study includes school-age children who are studying in Spanish dual-immersion school programs and fall between the ages of 11-13 years. This is a single-visit study of 3-3.5 hours, for which you will be paid $15 an hour.  If you are a mother of a child, between the ages mentioned above or know someone who would be interested to participate please consider giving us a call at (971) 220-5648 or emailing edldoregon@gmail.com for more information, and we will be in touch soon. We welcome children with disabilities! Also, our staff speaks both English and Spanish.

A TYPICAL VISIT TO THE LAB

You may be invited to visit the EDLD lab to participate in one of our studies! Here is what a typical visit to the lab looks like:

Welcome
We are located in the Clinical Services Building in the College of Education on University of Oregon’s Eugene campus.

We will greet you in the main lobby near the elevator.
You can enter the building from either side of the building.

The first entrance is located in the parking lot of the College of Education complex.
The second entrance is on 18th Street.
We will escort you to the EDLD lab suite in the basement where we will begin by explaining the study.

MILO (Maternal Input Langauge Output)

Once you’ve decided to participate, you and your child will play a variety of games using toys, books, and other child-friendly materials. These games will tell us about your child’s language abilities.

Visits typically last between 1 to 1.5 hours.

Here are some of the tasks your child may be asked to do:

Free-play
We will provide a set of toys and you and your child will play together as we listen to your child’s language. In some studies your child may even be asked to wear a fun vest with an embedded audio recorder (LENA).

Touchscreen task
Your child will be asked to identify common objects on a touch screen with the help of one of our trained researchers. Using this task we can get a sense of children’s early word comprehension.

Looking Task
You and your child will sit together to look at a series of pictures of common objects while they listen to someone talking. This task helps us measure children’s speed in processing spoken language and in organizing known words.

Interviews
You will answer some questions about your child, yourself, and your family. This helps us to learn about your family’s experiences, the ways that you support your child’s language learning, and the language skills of your child.

School-Age Bilingual Study

Once you’ve decided to participate, The mother will be asked some questions about the language and literacy details of the student.

Eye-Tracking
At the same time, the student will be guided to a booth with an eye-tracking system. In this activity, the student will view pictures on a screen. The system will either say some words aloud or display written words on the screen. The student’s task will be to pick the picture that they believe matches the meaning of the heard or seen word. The test will include both Spanish and English words.

Language Test
Another activity will be a standardized language test in both English and Spanish. This test will involve tasks like selecting the right picture for a given word, repeating words that are spoken, and recognizing letters of the alphabet.

Wrap-up
At the end of the visit we will answer any questions you may have.

In some studies compensation for time and travel to the lab is provided.

Following the visit, we will escort you and your family back out of the building into the parking area.

FAQ

  • Does the staff speak Spanish?

    Yes!

  • Will my child and I ever be separated?

No. We want children to enjoy their visit to the lab. This way, they are more likely to show us their best performance on the variety of language games we will play. We do not separate children from their parents at any time to make sure children and their parents are as comfortable as possible.

  • Where is your lab located?

We are located at the University of Oregon in the basement of Clinical Services Building at 18th Street and Hilyard Street in Eugene. Click here for our lab address and driving directions. Occasionally, we will have opportunities for families to participate in other cities around Oregon as well.

  • Is parking free? Where should I park?

Parking fees for lab visitors will be compensated.  Street parking is available all around the Clinical Services Building where the EDLD lab is housed, including Hilyard Street and 18th Street. There are 2 hour meters. You will be given specific parking instructions when we schedule your visit.

  • How long is a visit to the lab?

The length of the a lab visit varies depending on the study and on children’s willingness to participate in our games. We anticipate most visits last between 1 and 2 hours.

  • What do I receive in compensation for participating?

Compensation varies depending on the time commitment and nature of the study. We will always tell you about study compensation before the visit begins.
