MISIÓN DE INVESTIGACIÓN Y DESCRIPCIÓN DEL LABORATORIO

El Laboratorio de Desarrollo de Lenguaje Bilingüe (Laboratorio EDLD) está dedicado a comprender cómo los niños pequeños de entornos bilingües desarrollan su (s) idioma (s) maternos y el Ingles. En particular, el Laboratorio EDLD se enfoca en el desarrollo del lenguaje dual del español y el inglés de niños desde el nacimiento hasta la edad preescolar. El Laboratorio EDLD también realiza investigaciones relacionadas con intervenciones tempranas de lenguaje para niños de habla hispana y sus familias con el fin de desarrollar métodos que tengan en cuenta su idioma y cultura.

El laboratorio de desarrollo de lenguaje dual temprano está ubicado en la Universidad de Oregon y está dirigido por las Dras. Stephanie De Anda y Lauren Cycyk. Ambas son Profesoras de Trastornos y Ciencias de Comunicación.

LÍNEAS DE INVESTIGACIÓN

El laboratorio de EDLD se involucra en tres áreas de investigación, todas enfocadas en promover el desarrollo temprano del lenguaje para los niños latino/as:

  • Desarrollo del lenguaje en contextos bilingües

    Muchos niños de origen latino/a están expuestos tanto al español como al inglés desde una edad temprana. En nuestro laboratorio, investigamos el desarrollo del lenguaje en este contexto bilingüe. Nos preguntamos, ¿cómo afecta la cantidad de exposición al inglés y al español en el dominio de cada idioma? ¿Cómo organizan ambos idiomas en la memoria los niños pequeños que están aprendiendo dos idiomas? ¿Cuándo y por qué los niños pequeños mezclan sus dos idiomas cuando hablan?

  • Contexto sociocultural del desarrollo del lenguaje

    Los niños latino/as en los EE. UU. Aprenden el idioma de maneras similares y diferentes de niños de otros orígenes. Además de aprender dos idiomas, muchos niños latino/as también provienen de familias inmigrantes y de una variedad de entornos socioeconómicos. Algunos niños viven en un hogar con hermanos mayores o familias expandidas que ayudan con el cuidado de niños. Nuestro laboratorio trata de comprender la influencia de estas experiencias únicas y otras en el desarrollo temprano del lenguaje. Por ejemplo, preguntamos, ¿de qué manera los padres latino/as apoyan el lenguaje y el aprendizaje de sus hijos? ¿Cómo ayudan otras personas en el hogar a apoyar el aprendizaje y el lenguaje de los niños? ¿Cómo influye el bienestar de los padres en el lenguaje y el aprendizaje de los niños?

  • Evaluación e intervención del lenguaje

    Los educadores y los clínicos enfrentan dificultades para evaluar y tratar a los niños latino/as con retrasos en el desarrollo de su lenguaje. Una razón por esta dificultad es la falta de herramientas de evaluación apropiadas y programas de intervención para niños latino/as, especialmente aquellos que están expuestos al español y al inglés. En nuestro laboratorio, desarrollamos nuevas herramientas e intervenciones para ayudar a los clínicos e investigadores a resolver este problema. Por ejemplo, estamos probando nuevos programas de tratamiento dirigidos a promover el desarrollo del lenguaje para niños pequeños y preescolares de habla hispana. Estas intervenciones toman un enfoque centrado en la familia e incorporan el entrenamiento de los padres en un entorno grupal. Nuestra prioridad es que las evaluaciones e intervenciones tengan en cuenta el idioma y las culturas del hogar de los niños latino/as para que podamos apoyar mejor el éxito de los niños.
