The EDLD Lab is thrilled to announce that Lidia Huerta successfully defended her doctoral dissertation entitled “Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Care: An Exploration of Speech-Language Pathology Students’ Training and Competence”. This study explored the perceptions of second year speech-language pathology master’s students on their training in culturally and linguistically responsive care as well as the factors that impacted their care. Findings suggest that students who reported more encounters with individuals from other cultural and linguistic backgrounds also had higher self-reported knowledge and skills in providing responsive care. Students also identified important strengths and gaps in their graduate training in this area. This information will be valuable to build graduate training opportunities that further culturally and linguistically responsive care, which is essential for reducing disparities in care experienced by individuals with communication disorders in both medical and educational settings. Congratulations, Dr. Huerta!
