Dr. Laura Lee McIntyre will discuss the Oregon Parent Project, a research study that examines family and child well being during early childhood and the impact of a family-based intervention program for toddlers and preschool-aged children with developmental delay. Dr. McIntyre is a principal investigator with the Child and Family Center and an associate professor in the Department of Special Education and Clinical Sciences at the University of Oregon. Susan Shultz, a licensed clinical social worker with the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center, will introduce Sibshops, a program for brothers and sisters of children with special needs. She will also host a discussion about the challenges of talking about your child’s needs to family members and what makes family gatherings difficult to participate in at times. The class will be held during the day, so please allow extra time for parking. Metered parking is available on 18th Ave., or free, 2-hour parking is available on side streets. Families with children enrolled in A Child’s Garden will attend this training while their child is in class. Childcare is not available for this class. Early Childhood CARES and The Arc Lane County Families Connected will host a Forum on the Governance of Early Intervention (EI) and Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) on Thurs., June 5 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hilyard Center, located at 2580 Hilyard Street in Eugene. All parents, providers, administrators, community partners and other interested participants are welcome. At the forum we will: 1) learn about the past and current collaborations between the State Interagency Coordinating Council (SICC) and the Early Learning Council; 2) learn what the Legislature has asked of the SICC; 3) gain an understanding of the context and issues; and 4) discuss opinions, concerns, ideas and recommendations. The Science Factory Children’s Museum & Exploration Dome will host Tot Discovery Day on Fri., June 6 from 9 a.m. to noon at 2300 Leo Harris Pkwy. in Eugene. This is a casual, friendly and fun “drop-in” program for parents and preschoolers to discover science together. This month’s theme is water wonders. Summer Reading Spots will start this month in both Springfield and Eugene. This is a free story time for infants and children up to age 12, their parents, caregivers and siblings, and kids will receive free books! The Summer Reading Spots will take place immediately after FOOD for Lane County’s Summer Food Program. In Eugene, the Summer Reading Spot will be held Tues. through Thurs. from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Petersen Park from June 23 through Aug. 21. Petersen Park is located at 870 Berntzen Rd. In Springfield, the Summer Reading Spot will be held Tues. through Thursday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Willamalane Park Swim Center from June 24 through Aug. 21. The Willamalane Park Swim Center is located at 1276 G St.
The Arc Lane County’s JumpStart Program provides summer fun for kids, and parents can use their K Plan funding to pay for this program. The program will be held at 4110 River Rd. in Eugene.
