These paper and digital explorations helped me develop the lantern further. Transferring the forms generated from the paper and preliminary rhino designs proved challenging. Paper experiments continue to prove beneficial, with the added benefit of guidance from the “paper folding techniques for designers” book. The grasshopper plug-in lunch-box provides user-friendly methods for breaking down most shapes into specified modules. However, when the geometry in reintroduced to Rhino there are certain diamond modules that go missing. Otherwise the process works well in translating 3d forms into smaller components that can then be flattened for fabrication. Lastly, the final step would require extracting diamond modules and perform alterations based upon curve attraction or similar approaches.
