Heliotrope and Solar Shading

GH plug-in Heliotrope gives precise solar geometry that can can drive solar responsive modules, and can generate useful shadow information. The sun vector and altitude (sun elevation angle)

To set the sun position interactively, type “Sun” in Rhino

The sun can make a responsive module open and close:  remap the sun’s elevation angle (0 to 69 degrees) to the object’s radius (9.8 to 0.1)
Heliotrope’s Silhouette function maps shadows onto the ground plane
Orient Solar Disks to the Sun: from original XY plane to Plane Normal to the sun vector. Use centers of each cell from the Area component.
A matrix of interactive modules can simulate a kinetic screen.

Can you use the angle to drive your solar module and create a dynamic screen?

Univ. of Oregon Architecture Department head Nancy Yen-wen Cheng, RA, LEED AP researches how design tools and approaches shape outcomes, with a specialization in how craft and computation can stimulate the creative process. She has developed expertise in manipulating sheet materials to create light-modulating structures and has researched how surface relief patterns can increase convective cooling. She has developed fold and slot joints that give structural rigidity to foldable sheet structures and is eager to apply them to rapidly deployable refugee shelters.
