Experiments in Music Patterns

These three pictures are process pieces towards the final lantern design. The goal is to break down a music sequence, extract the data points that make up the wave and use that to inform where the rectangular slits, folds, and cutouts are being made. Though each one of these only really addresses one of the form, material and color explorations, I am working towards combining the three to inform the pattern created by the music. Small slits will be used from the parts of song that is made up of higher frequencies, short note lengths that will create a more erratic element in the design. Each of these slits will have alternating reflecting colors of blue and red. The longer, lower frequency notes will either have diffused covering, such as vellum or nothing at all. This is meant to give something more constant or focused in the lantern where the lighting is either diffused or direct, while the other aspects of the pattern use folds and color to visually reflect the sporadic musical composition of the song I am using. So these images may not reflect this full design intent, but only pieces of what the final lantern design will be.
