My scores for the Self-Assessment                                      Rank

Model the Way 22 2
Inspire a Shared Vision 21 4
Challenge the Process 21 4
Enable Others to Act 28 1
Encourage the Heart 22 2

Enable Others to Act is clearly the highest, with Inspire a Shared Vision and Challenge the Process being those with the least. I have been on many sports teams since I was a kid, most notably, golf, basketball, and lacrosse. Early on in these sports teams, we would be coached and led by the same person. As I grew older, continuing to mature, I found myself taking charge of teams I was on, and setting examples for my teammates. In this survey on the 5 practices of leadership I scored the most with Enable Others to Act. Being a leader of my sports teams, I would observe what others were succeeding at, and what things needed work. I have always tried to help others exploit their best skills and abilities, while working on improving the characteristics they are less experienced with. Using self-awareness and social awareness, I was able to make suggestions on teammates throwing forum, technique, and mindset. Our goal was to win games, and to win games we had to play better than then next team. If we could all exploit the best skills we were endowed with, victory was always a realistic goal. We won many games, tournaments, and jamborees. When words were not enough to help a teammate, I would tell them to observe my actions and see what they could learn from. Model the Way was the second rank in my LDP self-assessment, and that is a perfect example. Having others take notes from my own behaviors, to improve their own skills. I scored lower on Inspire a Shared Vision. I remember everyone was in the mindset to win games, but I would say that once we established that as our goal, I looked towards other things. Rarely did I stress the fact over the course of the season. I figure once it is established, everyone will know what we need to accomplish. I could work on revisiting goals constantly, to further the mindset and vision of the team/group.

Action Plan 1: Challenge the Process

Right now I don’t feel that I ask critical questions in the process of working with a team. Mostly when a process is in order, we stick to that idea unless is begins to break down. I could probably do a better job and constantly analyzing the process to make a team run more efficiently. I will plan on making a list of questions, ideas, and suggestions between every one of our meetings. My teammates will be able to hold me accountable for asking questions, and constantly thinking about the process we are using.

Action Plan 2: Self-Management

The one part of the self-management component is optimism. I am in a place where I can be quite skeptical and pessimistic. This usually pertains to the content of the work that the team/group has to complete. If the work is uninteresting to me, or I see no value personally, it is hard for me to be optimistic about. I would like to be able to change my attitude, and shift it to being more hopeful. My plan is to be self-aware of those times when input from me is needed in the group, and make sure that my attitude is more positive. Myself, and team members will be able to track how I am achieving this goal by observing my actions, and words.
