Understanding and Working with Others

I would say that some of my greatest strengths when working with others are communication, caring for others needs, and relationship management. These characteristics are crucial to having good personal leadership. I am not afraid to be confrontational and direct with people when I need to be, but am also caring and understanding when appropriate. I enjoy seeing other people succeed, and so I try and work to benefit their needs and encourage their strengths. I also never let my relationships trail off or become distant, I truly try and keep up on all my friendships to make a positive impact in their lives. Some of the weaknesses I have are not being optimistic, and am not much of a change catalyst. I’m not an overly enthusiastic person by nature; so being very optimistic is hard for me to do. My competencies of Emotional Intelligence would fall under the Self-Awareness with self confidence and emotional self awareness; Self Management with trustworthiness and adaptability; Relationship Management with development of others and communication. Having these traits help me manage the relationships directly around me. These competencies would highlight that I manage the personal relationships more individually, and then bring those together in a group setting. I am very aware of myself and how I act, so I am conscious of what example I am setting to others. Many people would say that I am easy to work with and work hard. In the course feedback one member mentioned “very easy to talk to and work with, and offers constructive input to discussion.” Another member spoke of how I lead, “takes initiative when we need to allocate roles or individual assignments.” These responses reinforce what I have observed to be my skills of Emotional Intelligence. As far as helping others do their best, I try and get to know a person and find out what motivates them, and run with encouraging them in that area. One of my team members noted: “helped the team move productively and efficiently, good at encouraging others to participate.” This is just a small example of how I helped others succeed in their own development.
