My top five values that I have chosen are family, friendship, enjoyment, health, and independence. Starting my day off today, i displayed my independence value. I woke up and got out of bed around 2pm. Being able to act in terms of my own time schedule and priorites is very important to me. I then went and played basketball with my friends for a couple hours at the rec center on campus. This hits my values of friendship, health, and enjoyment. I always try to talk to some of my friends everyday. I also really enjoy playing basketball and play whenever my friends can play. To hit my finally value today, I called my parents and talked to them for a little bit. My family is only a short drive to Portland away, but I still try and talk to them almost every single day. Family is everything to me and that is why it is at the top of my value list. They have done so much for me and are always there for me.

To answer the first questions of belief pattern, I believe I inherited my belief of family over everything. My whole family including grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles is really close. Most of us live within a couple miles from each other. We would always do weekly Sunday dinners where all of us would get together and eat. So this is why I hold my family before everything else. To answer the second question, I do not acknowledge any belief pattern I have to be no longer valid. The goal I have for the future is to finish college this spring term and start my modeling career in Asia. What stands in the way of my goal time, self motivation to eat better and work out more, and my school schedule because I don’t have time to do shoots.

Reflection:

This life value assessment was a good start to the term, as it  made me realize were I put things in my life. This artifact hits my objective of exploring one’s value system as it it got me to think of what I hold most dear in my life. My top 5 values are things that I do every single day and I wouldn’t be able to go a day without each of them. This assignment really showed me how important my family is to me. I feel very fortunate to have a supportive family and have a place to always go back to. Most people want to leave and move out of their parents house, but I could stay there forever. The friendships I have made in college are irreplaceable, especially this last year. I’ve met people who I hang out with almost every single day now and I wouldn’t have met them if I was anywhere else.

To help me find out where I got my values from, I read an article by Lewis called “A question of values.” He had section that was called “the most basic ways we come to know something,” which I saw experience and emotion were categories. Experience and emotion are how I come to pick my values. I need to see something or feel something for me to hold it true.

Future Goals:

As I grow older and experience more things, my values will change. But, I will always make sure that my top 5 will stay the same. With my family always being number 1 as they are always there for me and I could never live without them. I hope that I can install some of these values into my kids when I have them, so they can see how important they are. I know that they will freely be able to choose their own values, but I at least want to show them how family is over everything. How you can always count on them, just like what my parents did with me.
