The Cons of a Child Limit in India

Cons:

1.) India is a Democratic Country

A child limit was already attempted in India however it didn’t take and was difficult to enforce. The child limit would not work in India as it did in China because it is a much more democratic country.

2.) Unbalanced Gender and Punishment Among the Unfavored Sex

A child limit would result in an unbalanced gender ratio as it did in China as well as cruel treatment of ‘illegal children’: Because of a traditional preference for baby boys over girls, the one-child policy is often cited as the cause of China’s skewed sex ratio; the country has between 32 million and 36 million more men than would be expected naturally.”

Even the government acknowledges the problem and has expressed concern about the tens of millions of young men who won’t be able to find brides and may turn to kidnapping women, sex trafficking, other forms of crime or social unrest. Multiple research studies have also found that sex-selective abortion — where a woman undergoes an ultrasound to determine the sex of her baby, and then aborts it if it’s a girl — was widespread for years, particularly for second or subsequent children. Millions of female fetuses have been aborted since the 1970s. The abandonment, and killing, of baby girls has also been reported, though recent research studies say it has become rare, in part due to strict criminal prohibitions.

3.) Fear of Losing Future Successful Generations

India is a country with a booming technology industry, one that relies on young people. There is fear that, by restricting the number of children that can be born, there will not be enough educated young people in the next generation to carry on India’s technological revolution.

4.) Violates Women’s Rights

This emphasis and value of men within societies across the world, points to the real solution to the population issue. Women’s rights.

This includes better education, career opportunities, and access to birth control. This would not only be a big step for the women’s rights, but it is proven to decrease fertility: “Reducing fertility is essential if future population growth is to be reined in. Cynthia Gorney wrote about the dramatic story of declining Brazilian fertility as part of National Geographic’s 7 Billion series. Average family size dropped from 6.3 children to 1.9 children per woman over two generations in Brazil, the result of improving education for girls, more career opportunities, and the increased availability of contraception.”
