Midterm – Finalizing Tectonics and Building Systems

Facade Second Pass

During the second midterm review I prepared a couple versions of an enclosure that was essentially a conventional curtain wall set up. The idea was to become more energy efficient while still having some of the feel a perforated screen would: those moments where you could catch glimpses of what is going on inside the structure. I took cues from the existing rooftop’s alternating skylights and incorporated them into a pattern of vertical slits of different sizes and offsets along the entire stretch of the building.

View of the existing rooftop:

View of the facade concept:

The Northern facade did not follow this pattern, it featured apertures that corresponded more directly to the program spaces behind it. The sustainable measures discussed at the previous midterm were left essentially the same.

Review

The new facade concept was really well met, all except for the North Side. The reviewers felt that the North facade should share a language similar to that of the South side to feel more cohesive as an entire building. The intentions of the passive heating/cooling systems and the water collection systems needed a bit more refinement in terms of actual performance.

Next Steps

The next thing for me to do is establish how the building systems would work realistically and work out the final details of the Facade.
