Richard Artschwagers work directly relates to several heavily influential artistic movements and phenomenon’s in which occurred throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s. He was one of the pioneers of conceptualism. Conceptualism is the philosophical explorations of concepts and how the interact within the mind. Much of Artschwagers work explores key ideals of conceptualization by using illusionary principals to create non functional furniture as a form of sculpture. Some sculptural elements also explore notions of minimalism through the construction of material. Minimalism is essentially simplification of medium through a complete composition. Pop Art was also one school of artistic thought Artschwager compositions explored. Pop art was an art movement that emerged in the late 1950 in the United States challenging notions of traditional art and the influence of imagery from popular culture. Through the use of vibrant colors and the modern construction of his conceptualized furniture pieces Artschwagers art directly influenced such ideals of pop art. Many of Artschwagers pieces overlapped the three movements of Conceptual art, Minimalism and pop art. He did not wish his art to be associated directly with pop art. He was more concerned with ideals and fundamental principles of minimalistic practice through conceptual art due to his curiosity of sciences in which he studied through the production of Artwork.
