Buffy Assignment

At 02:13, there is a really scary diegetic sound. This is mostly just a movie about college and begins in a classroom, which isn’t calming but I am indifferent and definitely content as compared to the scary scenes. It isn’t calming, that’s for sure. Suddenly, you hear a girl singing in a long, dark hallway and a very vague view. This freaks me out because I’m afraid that something is going to pop out. At first though, it seemed like a non-diegetic sound, but it’s definitely diegetic.

The start of scene 24 is the most apparent non-diegetic sound to me because the sound gets louder and scarier when Buffy is looking out the window and the vampire appears. Then it becomes more tense because of the music and I was definitely on edge. Because the music gets louder, you know that something is going to happen.

The mise en scene occurs during Buffy’s dream. The lightning definitely was until she found the voice of the girl was darker. At first, it seems like she isn’t dreaming, but something doesn’t seem right. They used a dimmer light to make this effect and the loud crack of thunder and the lightning made it more horrific.

  1. I really like your example of a diegetic sound, the eeriness of he voice definitely contributed to the spookiness and creepiness of the scene. Horror scenes always seem to do a great job of keeping me at the edge of my seat, afraid that something, or someone, will suddenly jump out and attack the character, scaring myself in the process. Although this is a classic example of horror film making, I always seem to fall for it. Your example of the non-diegetic sound is perfect. Music always seems to amplify any movie, regardless of genre. Soundtracks can help push any scene further in whatever direction it is trying to go. We disagree a bit on our choices for mise en scene occurrences.I chose the opening sequence for my example of mise en scene. This shows multiple occurrences of special effects, and most notably, great examples of makeup. The series Buffy, did a great job behind the scenes, expanding what we thought was possible for television, similarly to shows like Walking Dead now.

  2. At first I think it is non-diagetic sound because it is background noise but as they come into the hallway it becomes diagetic sound. I am not sure if something can be non-diagetic then diagetic but if can this scene would prove it. The scene to me also shows non-diagetic sound with the corny storm in the background and the lights flashing to try and make it scary. Your non-diagetic scene is great. This to me is another typical scary movie. This is why I dont watch scary movies much because they are all the same to me. The mise en scene can be described like that in probably every buffy movie
