Post 01: A Question of Values
I just read the excerpt from the article, Hunter Lewis’ A Question of Values: Six Ways We Make the Personal Choices That Shape Our Lives (1990). That makes me think over the value. What exactly is the value? Where the value comes from?
In the article, the author point out the basis framework of value. Lewis stated, “although the term values is often used loosely, it should be synonymous with personal evaluations and related beliefs, especially personal evaluations and beliefs about the “good”, the “just” and the “beautiful,” (p.7). I think this is the fundamental step when people are thinking about value. Lewis also conclude 6 mental model that how can we gain the knowledge. I agree that people get the knowledge from emotion and authority. Indeed, I rely on the knowledge that I learn from school or authority. I am an emotional people and sometime I judge thing by my instinct. Although my friend would disagree my point, I still insist my view. I don’t know why I will so insist my point in that time. It’s maybe the women sixth sense. That’s also why I don’t know where the value comes from. To be more specific, I never thought about what kind of way we get the “value”. This articles maybe the answer for how we have the “value”.
Also, lewis mentioned that “are the four basis models of developing values truly complete? Are there really no others? Possibly…what is called intuition here may be given a different name elsewhere”. (p.12) That’s true that the 6 models is not exactly work for everyone, but it gave the direction for people to explore. The process of evaluating the things and make a comment is how to shape our value. I consider that people’s cognitive ability is the first thing that people can make comment about something. Different people’s perspective makes various evaluating.
That makes me think about the other way of value. Excepting the 6 ways that Lewis has mentioned. There do still exist the network values. For example, the Xbox game playing, the more different game was released; people would more tend to buy Xbox. To some extent, video games increase Xbox’s value. Therefore, in this case, the value is relative.
