Artifact 3: Is food Art?

Objectives:

-Examine methods for evaluating qualities of art, such as product versus process, the difference between craft and fine art, must art be archival, and what is an aesthetic reaction.

-Explore the notion of food as an artform.

-Consider cultural differences in the production and consumption food.

Original Post:

Definitely, food is an art. As Dissanayake said “ Art is the behavior or propensity to “make special” (22)”. By what Dissanayake meaning, I think chef use food to make something special. Let’s take food as an example. Food can be separate into two parts, fast foods and slow foods. However, not all foods are art. There are many factors to consider food is art. For me, tasty, fragrance, food’s shape, food’s packaging and nutrition are the most important. As I see, fast foods just use to meet our basic needs for food, it cannot be classified as art. When we are hungry, we choose to eat fast food, because it is faster. E.g. McDonald, Burger king.
By contrast, slow foods can be considered as arts. As Tefler said, “…can be aesthetic reactions to tastes and smell”(11). When we go to a fancy restaurant, like the Michelin three-star restaurant. We can always find the chef very care about the details of the food, like dishes with proper decoration, the choice of food and the collocation of color. Chef combines all those factors together to make food special. That’s the reason why I think slow food should be considered as arts. Also chef like a creative artist, and food is like an artwork, which is unique and delicious. Let’s talks about an interesting example, molecular cuisine. Chef adds different materials during the cooking process, after a short time; the food will change its physical or chemical properties. It’s a subversion of the traditional cooking method. So sometimes art brings a sense of visual enjoyment to people. People also can feel what the artist wants to express. Appetizer, soup, entrée, desert, these are looks like a perfect artwork. To sum up, I think foods should be considered as art, and slow food is more artistic than fast food.

Reflection:

Personally, I think food is art. As Dissanayake said “ Art is the behavior or propensity to “make special” (22). So I believe chef use vegetable and meat together to make food special. For example, when I go to a fancy restaurant for meal, I was always attracted by the foods provided in there. Chef very cares about the details of the food, like the selection of ingredients and the collocation of food color. As Tefler states “It is generally agreed that there can be aesthetic reactions to tastes and smells” (11). I am totally agreed with his opinion. Last spring break, I back to my hometown, and eat a fantastic burger in a restaurant. The picture posted below. The meat is with juicy, and fries and vegetables served on the side. And it’s tasty.

However, not all foods could be considered as art. For example, fast food is a pipeline production process. The foods are lack of nutrition, and full of sugar. Business produce it for profits, and people eat it for convenience. To sum up, when foods with nutrition, creative, and with good tasty and smell, then we called it art.

Future:

In the future, I would like to know the relations between foods and cultural. I live in Asia, so I know Asia’s food features. But I want to know more. Like what others think foods with their cultural in different regions. Also, I want to eat different types of foods in the future.
