Remix Discussion

This TED video is very powerful and professional to describe development and commercialization of telecommunications technology. Lessig talks about the society transfer from “read-write culture” to “read-only culture” He also claims that for a real read and write culture, it should be full of love and none profit. For the progress of technology, it is easy to use other’s idea in someone’s own creation. He do not against the piracy, he said that people always break the law everyday. Is “remix” is a bad behavior or not?

I think it is shameful that to steal other people’s idea or creation. The people create things with their brain storm and their experience. When other people steal it, the creation of other people has been blocked. This  behavior is bad for people’s innovation. A creation is someone’s value and achievement. The people who steal it or copy it without permit is immorality, and this is also disrespect to the creator. If the people remix things together just for fun or entertainment and with none profit, I think it is feasible.

  1. Hi Zheng:
In your posts, it is very clearly shown in your attitude about read only culture. And you separated your post in two paragraphs. The first paragraph summarized the speaker’s idea about read only culture in TED video. The second paragraph is talking about your idea, which is very easy to read. However, in my opinion, I have a different attitude about read only culture. According to my post: “The read only culture is speaks of professionalism. Its tokens of culture demand a certain respect.” in read only culture, the culture or product is provided by other sources, which possess an authority knowledge or culture. Read only culture emphasizes learning and preserves its integrity (Kaiqing). And I think learning is an important part of a read only culture. Like during every lecture, we get knowledge from the professor. But it is not immoral or disrespect to the creator. I just want to say, sometimes read only culture is not bad.

  2. I really agree with your opinion especially for your last sentence, “If the people remix things together just for fun or entertainment and with none profit, I think it is feasible”. I think using other’s work or idea to create in immoral and it will decrease the ability of innovation of the society so that cause a serious problem. However, if someone just remix other’s work or idea together just for fun and do not get profit, I think it is OK and it also would not limit people’s creativity.

    • I agree that to copy or remix someone’s artwork is shameful, as Kainqing said. And while agree that using someones artwork to remix as an experimental or learning process is also fine—I believe it should never be published publicly online or in print. That’s when it becomes stealing and copyright infringement. Taking someone’s artwork and remixing it or altering it and publishing it without the artist’s permission is stealing. If you want to publish it—one can always contact the artists and ask to publish it, giving credit and a link to the original artist. Many artists will graciously oblige. Thanks!
