Unit 09

After I watch the TED, I think I have to admit that a lot change will happen in the future, just like the presenter said that when he was young, people like to sing songs, but right now people hear these songs through some electronic devices night and day. People may lose our vocal in the future. I think that is really true and that is what exactly will happen. Actually, we may lose our creativity in the future. Right now, the “read-write” culture is challenged by “only-read” culture, that is the remix culture. The kids, or all people should understand the relationships of themselves and the digital technology. Is that really true we will lose our creativity because of the developing technology and many other remixing electronic devices? Will we lose many nature things in the future just like our vocal? How will the remixing things affect our future life?

  2. Hi Yiran,

Thanks for posting a thought-provoking question. I think that technology has created a new wave and necessity for creativity. I think we have to train ourselves to recognize the technological advancements as creative thinking. For example, the ideas behind Iphone apps, such as SnapChat, are innovative in creative. Now the question becomes, are they aesthetically pleasing or creative? Probably not. I do not belief we are losing our creativity, but rather we are adopting new ways of seeing and appreciating creativity in the world. The “Cultures Compared” article is structure to compare “these two cultures (that) embody different values” (page 84). I don’t understand why the article focuses on the drastic differences between the two, rather than focusing on the clash between them. It’s also pretty obvious that the author is bias towards RW!! I think that as we mature into adulthood, we will find ourselves playing an RO role in some facets of our life, and a RW role in others. Point being, authority cannot dictate the boundaries of creativity unless individuals are sound with their ideas!!

  3. Hi, Yiran
I appreciate your thinking combining TED but as far as I am concerned, I do not agree people in the future will lose our vocal. In my opinion, I think the classic will be kept in the world no matter how the electronic devices develop in the future. In other words, the electronic devices can never take place of the classic. Though the development of electric devices has made some challenge of the traditional music culture, I do no believe its appearance will risk the existence of traditional music mode. As for the creativity, when we develop different kinds of electronic devices, we take advantage of our creativity. Therefore, I think our creativity has not been lost. The appearance of electronic devices can help people create music easier than before, but it does not mean that its appearance will get rid of people’s creativity. The contemporary people use both traditional way and electronic devices to create music. Though it is easier for the musician to make music with electronic devices, many artists create music by traditional means. I think only when different kinds of methods are allowed, can music flourish. The contemporary people take advantage of the development of technology more and more often, but we also enjoy the nature things as well. I think that the remixing things will not be placed heavily in the future, because something new will be created and it will take the place of the remixing things.

    • HI, Shelly

Electronic devices are still developing right now, but do you think that musicians can use old ways to create music? My point is that if musicians use electronic devices to create music right now and in the future, they can ignore the stave but still can create music. How about many of them forget how to use stave or how to create music through stave. I just could not image, because stave was the basic things in music field and have an important historical role in music. Yes, people can learn quickly and make quickly through electronic devices, but I just worried that they forget the basic things in this field, and I think the traditional culture is very important in people’s history and people themselves.

  4. Hi Yiran,
The movement away from the read write culture is something that I believe has already happened. You have kids in grade school who no longer learn to read and write using traditional materials, instead they use I-Pads and other such tablet trinkets. I could never imagine learning at such a young age on such advanced technology. Now the question becomes, it this a bad thing that kills creativity? My opinion is no and here is why.
The fact that technology is completely changing the way that we analyze and go about learning things is not in itself bad. It only becomes bad if we become complacent with this technology and no longer strive to innovate. I would argue that this technology is sparking even more innovation than is normal, due to many of these things being a new frontier or sorts. The possibility of this new wave of technology is endless. Just look at the innovation that got sparked thanks to the Internet.
    Great post,
    Christian
