According to the article “Comparing Cultures” by Lessig, he gives many interesting points about the difference between RO and RW which are two different type of creativity. He points out that RO is more serious and professional and RW is from both professionals and amateurs. This resource difference causes the value of these two categories spread in different way. Under RO, the creativity is limited by professional rules and kids learn knowledge from school base on these limited rules. However, the RW spirit is different. Without the limitation, but still keep the professional quality, the creation can be so random and amazing and could be something we have never seen. Even the source of RW creation is not original, but the process of remixing different old creations can become a brand new creation and it could be outstanding. Unfortunately, RW limited by law. Not every single piece of RW work can be allowed because it might offend the finder of original source. We need to find a way to solve this puzzle because the creative environment that RW could provide is incredible. The police maker should find a way to make both mix-creation legalized and keep it professional at the same time.

1.Correctly identify the primary thesis of  ”Computer Graphics: Effects of Origins”

According  to “Computer Graphics: Effects of Origins” by Beverly Jones, she shows that there is a big influence between computer graphics and art from nowadays and past. Art and computer graphics impact each other in a special way. People want to see the clear and beautiful graphic of a true art, then the improvement of the computer graphics will fill this demand. And when digital graphics are improved, then people is going to have a better chance to see the art work they want to see. This proves that there is a strong connection between art and computer  graphics.

 2. Identify one of the three historical examples Jones provides as an illustration of her thesis.

I can give an example from the article which is a case in 1985 of Tony de Peltrie. The 7-min-50-sec film Tony de Peltrie cost 1.5 million dollars and took years to produce. At that time of period, making this kind of  graphics  movie is really hard and expensive but there is strong demand for that. These movie director want to find a way to  reduce the cost of making such quality of movies and improve the quality of movies  at the same time. So with the time pass, people always trying to find a way to solve  these problems.

3. Provide a compelling and accurate illustration of Jones’ thesis at work in today’s culture.

In today’s  culture, Jones presents that high-tech is a strong trend of form for people to make art  projects  instead of hand-making since hand making can be unreliable at some point. Technology improves so fast  these days so that people want to use more of  these technology so they can  make art project faster and  more accurate.

Every interesting topic for this week. Personally, I am typical PC gamer. I spend more than 15hours a week on games with friend or alone. According to the TED talk by Jane McGonigal, game can save the world by solving the real life puzzles in the imagine world.  You might think it won’t be true and I can’t promise you playing game can save the world either, but what I can tell you is game improve a person’s ability to manage and observe things. Why is that? Because there are so many puzzles in every games. Some are pretty simple but some are extremely hard.  I am also a Economics student. Economics teaches me the importance of allocating resource. How important is it? For example, every month you need to buy food under your budget level so you won’t run out of money and get hungry. And we can make it bigger, every month, the whole world is allocate their money to buy food supply at their budget level. If you don’t manage your money well, you might get hungry or if accident happened and you don’t have money for medical supply. So allocate resource is always a big issue in the world and everyone is solving it.  How does that connect to the game world? Because we, gamers, solve these problems in game. It  is like a simulation. Without the actual cost in real life, we might solve the real life problem in games.

There is a group of people called “Extra life”. People donate money to them by playing games together and “extra life” send these money to help kids. One of the big donation was on Twich.TV which is the world biggest video platform and community for gamers. On that day, so many people donated under the name of games. Now, Extra life has over millions donations overall to save the kids around America and Canada.  People know they are doing the right thing and they just need a right platform to help them. Game is just the right tool.

 

 

1.In my opinion, spirituality is something really pure of what an individual can think about based on what he/she believes. It does not have a wide-agree definition, but I think everyone has spirituality.  spirituality is not just a simple process of one man’s thoughts, but a balance point of his/her ideas in every situations.  When spirituality shows itself,  everyone can actually see what it looks like.  Overall, spirituality is pretty unclear but has deep meaning.

2.Different from spirituality, religion is something more specific.  Why? Because religion has a goal. The goal of religion is to let people believe this idea. If we can see religion, it is just like an apple in front of us. We can see the details on it, like colors or any hole on it. However, we cannot see what’s inside of it. The core inside of the apple maybe bad. You can only know when you taste the apple. This is how religion feels like.

3.Creativity is not a strange word. Most of my class in university tells me to be creativity. Reason is because creativity can bring really amazing creation. When someone tells you to create something it does not necessarily means that you have to make an object that has never been discovered, but you can just combine two old things with new reasons  and meaning and it will become a creation. Then the ability of creation is called creativity.

4. The source of  creativity is from everywhere. Most people get their ideas from daily life. When your assignment needs you to be creative, people will automatically search from their old experience and they will search it. They search it so they can see clearly what can be combined together and make this  assignment much more easier. Creativity really just come from everywhere in daily life.  Everyone can be creative. They just don’s know it.

#1 The first article is “Why do People Like Horror Movies?” by Guest Columnist. It mainly talked about the reason why some people enjoy horror movie. In this article, Guest explains simply that people have a demand for horror element based on biology and psychology, especially for teenager or young adult. They watch horror movie not just for fun. They watch it so they can know what it is like to be in a horror environment like murder. People want to have a taste about how these horror works in real life. So they try to get information from movies in order to find something useful to learn. Guest has a real impressive conclusion, he said ” If fear is experienced over and over, onscreen or otherwise, it makes a person stronger in the face of real threats”( Columnist 2009). So his whole point is people enjoy watching horror movies because they want to learn something from it.

#2 The second article is “Why we Love Scary Movies” by Richard Sine. It has similar point as the first article, but more focus on why young teenager like horror movie. One of the reason is young teenager like horror movie simply because their parents don’t like they watch horror type of things. It is just a teenagers behavior to against parents. However, the more standard explanation is  people “seek out violent entertainment as a way of coping with actual fears or violence”(Sine 2007). So Sine Richard agrees that people enjoy horror movie because they want to know how fear feels like.

In “Why Horror” By Noel Carroll, he asked a question about “why are horror audiences attracted by what, typically(in everyday  life), should (and would) repel them?”(Carroll 2002). The answer is pretty simply. These people who enjoy horror movie like to have a close taste of how fear or violent feels like.  It doesn’t necessary means these audience have psycho issue, but it proves that these people want to know how horror feels like no matter they like it or not. Personally, I don’t really watch horror movie a lot because it’s scary and creep me out. I might have a nightmare because this horror movie. So usually I try to avoid watching horror movie, but it doesn’t mean I don’t ever watch one. I do watch some, but only some are acceptable  to my feels.  Horror is just a strange thing. We agree it is not natural, but people still keep enjoying it because the adventure it brings.

I don’t usually watch a lot horror movie or horror type of things because it is not good for health.(It scares me!) Nevertheless, I did watch several horror movies like リング, a Japanese horror film(I think it translates as “ring”, but I am not sure). I watched this movie few years ago with my young cousin. It still scares me now if I tried to recall the movie.

I do have a problem on my computer to get access to the Buffy episode, but I will try to do an analyze. In this unit, we learned there are three elements in a horror film: non-diagetic sound, diagetic sound and mise-en-scene. For mise-en-scene, just a terrified shocking screen will give enough scary feeling. Like staring, a reflection of some monster, etc.This kind of horror provides people a visual scare and their body will react immediately when they see some visual horror. However, only combined with sound effect, it can be called as scary. There are two types of sound effect. One is background environment sound or called non-diagetic sound. This is the sound that not provided by human but itself provide a spooky feeling before the actual visual horror appear. For example, we always know some scary moment will happen because the background music is spooky already. So non-diagetic sound is really important for horror. However, I don’t really understand is how diagetic sound works, but what I can guess is when people say something include horror element, it is really easy for audience to get such scary feeling. So what diagetic sound does is to strengthen the scary moment.

This is a pretty attractive topic in my opinion. It has been so long that I have observed myself very carefully. I am a very “careful” man. I don’t talk that much, even with good friends or families. The reason is if they are my families or good friends of mine, they should know me very well and too much conversation just break this kind of relationship. I only chat a lot when something important happened. And if they are not my families nor good friends of mine, it is not worthy to spend time of both sides by communication. This is my life behavior and it is pretty strange. Besides that, I am qualified as a normal person. I like listen music, playing games with good friends and want to find true love in this unique life.

Haha, enough joke. Now let me observe what I am wearing. I am pretty casual about what I want to wear. When I want to go out, I wear the most comfortable clothes. By comfortable, I mean convenient to wear and nothing too strange looking and warm enough in winter or cool enough in summer. I prefer to wear the cloth with dark color. For example, in this term, I have been wore black t-shirts and dark blue jeans most of time. Until this point, my dressing is pretty normal. However, I also wear a black watch and a red bracelet. The watch is a present from my dad before I came to America the first time. I always wear this. I am not just treating it as a gift from an important family member but also a great tool to know time so I can manage things in order. And the red bracelet is from a really good friend. She delivered to me on my birthday last year and the reason she gave me that is because last year was a unique year for the Chinese like whose age is either 12 or 24 or 12*n. In China, there are 12 Chinese zodiac. Mine is horse. It rotates every 12 years and last year was horse year. The reason she gave me a red gift is because red present luck in China. This is just a wish me luck  gift.  I always wear this two gifts because they are really special to me. Mainly just because the person who gave it to me is important to me.

For using purpose, I wear watch mainly because I like to control time, but it doesn’t mean I manage time really well but I just believe time is important and I should try to manage it better. Secondly, I wear bracelet because I believe other people’s positive believing can impact me. In this way, I can be more positive. Since I am an international student, I left my family and old friends and come abroad to learn advanced knowledge so I can have a better chance to improve the quality of my future life. If I lived well in the future, it can means a payback for my parents in my opinion. My parents want to live better than everyone else. In China, it is normal that people want to compete each other, sometimes they even compete about their kids’ study ability because they think if you have better score your chance of having better future life is greater . However. in my opinion, this is really bad for the kids. It really limits the kids’ capability of thinking and creating, but I was living in that kind of environment. This really affect the way I dress myself. I wear dark color cloth and this means I don’t want to be noticed too much. By that, the chance of me being competing with other people is less. I don’t like to compete since I am scared of competing. Not because I might lose by competing but  the process of competing left a shadow when I was a kid. Now think about it, the past 18 years I was in China really gave me some bad behaviors. It left me of not liking to talk to people and don’t want to get noticed by other people. This is the reason why I don’t talk too much to people even good friends or families. In some part of me, I scare to talk to them. I scare to let them see my weakness. It is pretty pathetic, but the good news is I am trying to make a change. I try to find interesting topics to chat with friends and parents  so I can stay for chatting for a long time period. But, this is me. I analyze myself pretty deep and nice. I agree I learned a lot from finishing this essay.
