A question of Value

After reading this article, I find out myself being attracted by this topic. How do we choose our values? And why does it matter? Lewis who is the author of “A Question of Values”, shows readers the connection between value and human behavior. People usually decide to do one thing because it’s worthy to do. This is where the value comes out. We evaluate one thing before we proceed on it. The idea can be presented in questions : What is the good if I do the work or do I enjoy to do this thing, because people always think  the benefit before they do the work. If there is nothing good, nor it is the right thing to do, people usually don’t do these things. For example, people come to collage because they can get a better education so they can earn more which improves their future life quality. This is a logic value. However, if some people felt already satisfied of their life and they don’t want to invest more time or money to get a better a life, then most likely they will not go to collage.

The four small concept of value from “A Question of values” : sense experience, deductive logic, emotion and intuition, these things can be concluded as how people feel and is it logic to the people who define this value.  These four concept also come with an order. Before doing the thing, experience will tell you if you face this situation before which leads to a question of is this thing sounds right to do.  This is the  process of logical thoughts and intuitional feelings. The value of a thing can be really unique because different people have different logical thoughts, their life experience could be so different which makes them define value in an unique way. People always have friends with same value on some thing and companies hire the people with the same value as the company does. This world is fulfilled with value and people who have similar value usually stick together.

  1. After reading your article, I feel it is very interesting especially your first paragraph. From the Lewis’s article “ A Question of Values”, you found the writer show readers there is a connection between human behaviors and their values. You mentions that the motivation can drive people to do something is benefits. I agree with you and also like your example. You think most people choose to go to universities because better education is helpful for their future development. If some of them can have good earnings without diploma, they will not choose this way. However, about the relationships between human behaviors and values, you said “ People usually decide to do one thing because it’s worthy to do. This is where the value comes out” ( Wang, unit 02). Actually, I don’t really understand this sentence’s meaning you want to express. My understanding is that people’s values can impact their behaviors and what they want to do. Or behaviors can show a person’s real thoughts or beliefs, the further is their values. Can you explain that for me? I’m really curious about that.
You also talks about the four mental modes which can help people arrive at their values. You also give these four modes your understanding. In the meantime, I agree that people like to make friends with someone who have the same values with them. Different life experience lead to different values. Although there is something in your article I can’t understand well, I still find a resonance with you. Thank you.

    • Thanks for your comment. I see in your comment ” ‘ People usually decide to do one thing because it’s worthy to do. This is where the value comes out'( Wang, unit 02)” and you said you don’t really understand this sentence. What I mean in here is people using value as a tool to evaluate a thing and see if it is worthy to do. Different people value things according to different rules and this rules are based on “values”. When the values are different, even if different people are doing the same thing, the result can be so different. I see values as a tool which everyone have and it is pretty different and unique within different people.

However, I do totally agree that people’s values impact their behaviors and at some levels we have the same idea. We both figure out that values as a unique tool that impacts human behaviors creates different people with different habits.

  2. You state your personal viewpoint – ”People usually decide to do one thing because it’s worthy to do” (Aex, 2014) – at the beginning of post. I think it is the very effective way of clarifying author himself at beginning as audience will directly know what the main point of the post will be, and/or would be attracted to it if there is a shared interest. Meanwhile, I really agree with the fact you point out – People do things because the benefit will outweigh Not-to-do. This is what life is. We as one of members in society have to fight for the best thing we are able to , otherwise, one would be washed out (like the famous theory of Darwin – survival of the fittest). Then, followed by the example of collage, you well clarify the meaning of “logic value”. I enjoy reading this and believe an example can work better than what you think. Examples are realistic in life, and it allows audience to driving connections between what author try to explain and what they have experienced. Besides, question of education and life quality arise my interests in a higher degree because I would be more likely to concern this problem. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
