Value Assignment :list and reflection
My top five was : Health, Family, Loyally, Independent and personal development.
What I have got from my family are most come from my father, he has influenced me in many ways. He told me that health is very important, when I left hometown for school, he stared saying that safety is important, I understand this is all because his caring for me. He teaches me the importance of each one in my family all the time: we wish everyone health and safety so we can have a complete and happy family. Also, I value my principles, which can be called ” bottom lies” a lot more than other things. There are certain things I would not do unless I am in the condition that I have to do. For example, I registered a class with four of my friends, they drop it because they found out the teacher gives less As and less pass. I could not allow myself to do that because I believe I can pass any class if I work hard enough. I was in that class alone, however, I felt really good when I was really following my rules. My family showed me this in many ways: keep your principles, especially when you are facing temptation.
Today is Saturday, I cooked Breakfast for myself, and then I hang out with friends. From 4:00pm to now,
I was studying my GRE test and AAD class. I am eating health and living heath , these have already become my lifestyle, I cook a lot at home and I eat Organic, this is because I value my health more than the taste of food or the price of food. This is why I usually cook breakfast at home. Second, I studied GRE text, I am graduating this summer and I am planing to go to Boston University for my master degree. I am appreciate education , it has gave me many things that I could not get without it. I also value my independence, I studied hard to get scholarship so I could be little bit facially independent. One of the reason that I choose to go to master school rather than work is I can improve myself with knowledge for a few more years will be great . Thats my value, I value the cheerful moments with personal improvement. During the past three years in University of Oregon, I learned how to manage my study time, even though I am still not very good. I had big issue about time management, I used to finish homework at last minuet. If I have a test, I would start the review two day before the test, That was my biggest obstacle. For example, today, I was planing work from 2:00pm, but I started at 4:00pm.

Hello, Dongjoon, Thanks for your comment. You have brought out a fact that people gain some values from outside rather than create them by themselves, which is normally happens on everyone. I believe we all have seen some people around us have this kind of values. For example, people have religions, but they are doing what they are not supposed to do. I have asked myself, why they don’t practice what they believe. However, after a while, I realized, they are not really believe in their religion, even though the definition of religion values is : “religion values are principles founded in religious traditions, texts and beliefs” ( Jains). Believe and belief are strong words, it takes personal understanding rather than just being influenced, however, in most religion family that I have known, the younger generation are born with their religion role in the family, and in the church. They follow what their family follows and value what their family values. Their religion values are gained through influence instead of self discovering. Thats why when they go to college and another environment, they will easily changes their value or stop practicing it. I don’t think this is bad, everyone has this kind of moment in life that we compare personal values and religious-based values and then find out what we really want.

I think you have mentioned one very interesting topic: societal values and personal values. You said that your value are “totally influenced by the pressures of society’s creature, book and education”, which I agree with. Every college student has the same experience, the way we value the GPA and the way we plan our career are all influenced by family, society and the school system, most people value higher level degree more than the lower one. Majority people value certain type of jobs more than others. Environment plays a role in who we become and what we value. However, for some other people, they value what interested them more, I think this is what you have said”create a unique path for their lives.” Here, it is important to understand that society, media and political leaders exert certain pressures on people to conform to values held by the majority. therefore, it is possible that people hold a value that different with the majority. I also encourage these people to keep this “unique”. However, there is my disagreement, I think everyone has the side that different with the majority, but it is not as you said, decide by genes. Wray Herbert has mentioned in his article” Genes and values: The Dopamine Connection”: There are no genes for individualism or for social connection — world views are far too complicated for that — but perhaps there is another way that genes are interacting with the world, with culture, to produce individual variation in this perspective.”

Post 1-Values
According to the article, Human value is complex because it base on different modes.
Nowadays, media is also influence on people’s value. The huge amount of advertisements on TV, newspaper and other median are all use the slandered images, for example, the body images are all fit and beautiful, to influence people’s value of beauty. Women are wearing makeup and thin, men are fit and has muscle, all of these images are telling people : body like these are beautiful. Media creates the standers for body images and people who always see these images would trend to accept the stander. Meanwhile, when they think about “beautiful””health”, the images will come up to their mind. this is the reason why that most women think they are too fat even though their weight are actually normal. This is also the reason that today’s women are all trying to loss weight, some of them are eating disorderly. The rapid development of media has effected more and more people’s value everyday.
There is a question that the author asks in the article:” If values are freely chosen personal evaluations and believes, How do we arrive at these evaluations and believes?”As the author pointed out: firstly we come out to believe something, it may come from our culture, family, school, which can be classified as four main modes: sense experience, logic, emotions and intuition( Lewis). However, There are also two important mental modes: Authority and science. In my opinion, the authority and science has important effects on human values. For example, I have a friend Brain, he borne in a Christian family, he went to church during his entry life. His value about life and choices are mostly influenced by his family and what he heard from the church. At age 29, he got divorced and he started to question about what he used to believe. He decided to go back to school to started his two master degree, which were theology and linguistics. After he got the degree of these two majors, he gave up his religion. He started to change his lifestyle and travel more places. Clearly, authority and science could be the factor that changed his value. “Cognitive moral education builds on the belief that students should learn to value things like democracy and justice as their moral reasoning develops “(Santrock).
