Week 5 – Personal Adornment Reflection

I am the person who really do not care about my own dressing or outside look. I think dress is just to resist cold outside and keep out people’s important parts of body. My belief is that people should not over consider what they dress or body adornment. Clothing is just surface. No matter how beautiful or handsome you look, if you do not have a kind heart or have a bad temper, it worth nothing. When I was a child, I really like people who wear beautiful colors clothes. It was really awesome to attract people’s attention and easy to make people be like a star. One day, I was walking on the street with my mom and saw some people gather in a place. I was curious about that and walked to there. I saw a lady wearing a beautiful cloth was quarreling with an old man. She said a lot of dirty and bad words to that man just because the old guy hit the lady without purpose. The old man was homeless and looked so poor. The lady thought he hit her and made her cloth be dirty and wanted the old man to pay money for him. Obviously, the lady was unreasonable and no one like her. After that, I realized that no matter what you wear, it doesn’t matter. At the same time, I saw many famous and successful people wear very normal. They really don’t care about what they dress and they just focus on their career and undertaking. This situation really make me insist the ideas about dressing. However, people have to participate some party and wear good and appropriate clothes. It will be polite to do that. Hence,  adornment is not important but necessary.  We cannot judge people with their adornment. We need to look his inside things. Sometimes my girlfriend buy so many beautiful clothes and dress up for nearly 1 hour when she go out, I have to tell her truth that I love her not her clothes. I think the most important thing is people’s soul and quantity. It is more important than dressing good.  In past 10 years, I was never worried about what should I dress. I just made it easy and enjoy life. I just wear comfortable clothes. This thought never changed on me. I just insisted my opinion all the time.

My family’s value towards dress or body customization is almost same with me. However, they are my parents. They always tell me that buy whatever you want and don’t worry about money. My mom is very beautiful and kind. She never worries about her clothes. Even though she always tell me and give me money to buy beautiful clothes and shoes, I know she is afraid of that I could live well aboard. She always told me that people should not waste money on useless things and spend money on meaningful things. So does my father. He is a successful businessman in china. At the same time, he is also frugal. Even though he made a lot of money, he just bought Luxury goods for my mom and bought nothing for himself. Sometimes they do not say a word but we all know. For self, be a stingy person. For family members, be a rich man. This is my family’s core value and belief. Hence, I just carry out my ideas about easy dressing.

My peer community always dress good. Most of them are rich and like to buy beautiful clothes and shoes to adorn themselves. Boy’s core belief is that they want to dress handsome and attract girls’ attention. The same as girls, they also want to get attention from boys. Some people want to show their emotion. Sometimes they want to show their status. Different people have different ideas. We cannot judge people how they dress. Some people want to dress good for others. Some people dress well for themselves. At the same time, there are still some people like me. They are free for dressing and wear whatever they want.

No matter how surface you look like, it is still hard to judge people from only one way. It is possible to guess someone’s status and character from his dressing. People can guess and then they are given the first impression from people. Hence, how to dress and which is good for people to participate different kinds of public places. In the future, we have to find a job and get interview in company. In this time, dressing is important to give your boos good impression.

Unit 5 -Discussion Assignment

1. First person

I saw a black male at the gate of duck store. He is very tall and maybe 6’3”. This guy wearing dark green hoodie and sport pant with letters”UO”. The most obvious things is that he wore Jordan basketball shoes. That is my favorite one.   He was walking alone with his Nike schoolbag. He was also enjoying his big headset on his head. He showed his expression leisurely on his face. This tall man was going to enter duck store from the opposite road.

I guess he is a basketball player in U of O. Firstly, he wore the cloth looked like UO’s basketball team uniform. Secondly, he is so tall that he can play basketball easily. Thirdly, why I thought he is good at basketball because of my feeling. I also play basketball and sometimes I can figure the person who is good at basketball. I thought his family is not rich and most money he earned is from school team.

However, all of my ideas are my guess. He could be a football player or something else. In this value, I can learn that even though family is not rich to support students to go college, they can utilize their specialty such as sports to help themselves.

2. Second person

I observed the old guy for about 2 years. When I came to this campus, I can always see him at the bicycle shop. He always wore his reading glasses and his lovely hat. He was good at fix broken bicycles. I saw many times that he helped other students to fix bicycles. His cloths looked not clean and tidy. For sure, he was not rich man. Just sitting on the ground and research his stuffs.

I guess he must be the person who has a lot of experience in his whole life. When this old guy was young, he was full of energy and good at something. He must be the positive man. Because he said hello to others with smile and looked happy. He must have strong body when he was young because he was not thin even though he is old. I though he joint the army before.

This old guy gave me deeply impression. In this value, I realize that everyone should enjoy life like this old man every moment. Sometimes difficulty can stop us but we cannot be beaten by it. We need to be positive toward everything.

3. Third person

The last person is a female wore glasses. This girl was going to enter knight library. She holding some books in her arms and walking quickly. Her hair looked not tiny and her clothes were really normal looked like boy cloths and cheap.

This person is the typical guy who love study and is good at study or at least study hard. I guess she is too hardworking to enjoy life. Her whole student life is boring with study and books. I really hate this style of life.

However, this is just my first impression from this girl. Perhaps I was right, I want to tell her that she do not need to work so hard to ignore enjoying life. In this value, I can summarize my idea. People need to work hard for his successful life, but at the same time, he should enjoy this present campus life. Do not be rigid.

Food As Art Research – Academic Essay

In the article “Can Food Be Art?”, Sara Davis explained and showed his own ideas about arts and food as arts. “For good reason: That tiny word, art, has launched a thousand volumes theorizing what can or should go by its name.”(Sara Davis, para 1) He thought arts can be showed in different ways. At the same time, he think art cannot be judged or defined. Just like what he said “It’s a good illustration that without a solid defense of what art is, any judgment about what art is not will be unsound.”(Sara Davis, para 1) In his following paragraph of his article, he said that people usually use their sensory experiences to figure out the surface in the world and feel more in the mind. Aesthetic judgment is different for everyone. It is a kind of freedom ideas toward food as arts.  Sara Davis explained “To enjoy (or even to dislike) is to feel yourself feeling enjoyment (or dislike); it’s one way you know you exist, and that “you” are a being who enjoys (or dislikes) a particular thing. It’s less abstract when you consider how many cultural or political identities are defined in part by what you will (or will not) eat.”(Sara Davis, para 4) The writer also use wine compare with foods. It indicated that food is more free to feel it and more different meaning. Just like “Memory, allusions, personal and cultural relationships, and aesthetic judgments are meaningful associations that anyone can experience, though of course we don’t all experience them the same way.”(Sara Davis, para 7) As he said, mind is the important and principal one for understanding art. Food is very simple thing, but it contains a lot meaning. Food is so normal in human’s daily life that easy to express emotion and ideas. Sara Davis also asked many question about arts and answer them by himself to show his ideas about food as arts.

Art is something that is created, and whether it is aesthetically pleasing or not, a creation of a recipe or dish is a form of art because it took creativity to develop a certain flavor that can be either appreciated or unappreciated. Art is not something that always has to be appreciated, because different people can look, feel, or taste the same object and think of it differently. In Elizabeth Telfer in his article “Food as art”, he said “there are no limitation, in us or in the nature of tastes themselves, which prevent food from giving rise to works of art in the evaluative sense of that phrase, though these will be simpler that in the arts of sight and sound.” (Elizabeth Telfer, page 22) This is really similar with what Sara Davis said. They both think food is simple but still important to be art. Because there is no limitation for art, food can be art in many ways. “Wine and other artisanal goods are designed for this sort of aesthetic contemplation, but food does not require fine craftsmanship to be meaningful. ” (Sara Davis, para 6) That is why food is simple and full of meaning as well.

Even though food can be art for many people, they have still different ideas about the level of this kind of art. Elizabeth Telfer in his article “Food as art” tries to tell us that food is an form of art just like “If food cannot be more than a minor art form, there is a danger of being precious about it-of treating it, that is, as though is had more aesthetic importance that it does.”(Elizabeth Telfer, page 26) Elizabeth thought that food could be a minor art even though food is an important art. Hence, he limits the range of art about food. This idea can be compared with Sara Davis’s idea. Sara said that “All the same, eating and cooking can be expressive or even transportative to whosoever wants it:The novice cook and the master chef; those who bake from scratch to save money and those who do the same to show off expertise; our grandmothers who made something-out-of-nothing suppers during times of scarcity and the younger relatives that try desperately to imitate them.”(Sara Davis, para 7)  Their different place is that Elizabeth gave food its level of art. It is hard to deny which one is right, both of them are reasonable.

In my opinion, I think food can be art and no one can give its art level. Every art has its own deep meaning and its value is equal to each other. Food can be anything in art range.

Food as Art – Week 4

Elizabeth Telfer in his article “Food as art” tries to tell us that food is an form of art. At the same time, the art of food is a minor art. Many people do think it is not a good form of art and it is hard to accept this form of art “limits the contemplation that is possible – a work of food art will not be around very long to be contemplated. ..that transient works of art cannot acquire the stature that a long-lived work of art we have.”(24) Even though many people hold opposite ideas, Telfer still hold his idea and prove that food is art.

At first, Telfer started to prove that cookery is an art form ” It is true that cookery is often thought of as a craft…but we have seen, the usefulness of a thing does not prevent its being a work of art, so this criterion does not prevent cookery from being an art.”(16) Then, Telfer thought dishes have something to do with cookery and dishes are also art. He also said that “both an original recipe and an actual dish are works of art if they are regarded aesthetically.”(17)  After that he used this relationship to prove food is a work of art.

Telfer  tried to conclude someone’s idea that”there are no limitation, in us or in the nature of tastes themselves, which prevent food from giving rise to works of art in the evaluative sense of that phrase, though these will be simpler that in the arts of sight and sound.”(22) Then, he also prove that it is a minor art. Telfer said in his article”If food cannot be more than a minor art form, there is a danger of being precious about it-of treating it, that is, as though is had more aesthetic importance that it does.”(26)

Just like Ellen Dissanayake said everything could be art “So have ideas of beauty, sublimity, and transcendence, along with the verities of the human condition: love, death. memory, suffering, loss, desire, reprieve, and hope.”(Dissanayake 26)

UNIT 3 – What Is Art For? Essay Assignment

The term called “paleoanthropsychobiological” was coined by Ellen Dissanayake. She tried to present her own view of art for life’s sake. This view is very different and from special perspective. She tried to put several things together to be this term. These things are important to this term. So let me introduce some of them. First, One of these things is the idea of the whole art human history. Second, human societies from different times are necessary for this term. Third, art is a emotional need and have emotional effects on people no matter when it occurs.

Dissanayake used the phrase “making special” for view about art. Most people have common ideas about art that include three things mentioned before. She wanted to make it different. With her experience in the West, Dissanayake got a lot of new ideas. Making special is that art must be viewed human’s original peculiarity and also contain with human history, human culture and psychology. Everything has its special place, as well as normal things and common things. Just like different people has its own ideas about the value of art. Some people do not care about it and some people do the opposite thing. Dissanayake wanted to make special for her view about art.

First theory is common point in different times. “In medieval times, the arts in the service of religion, as they have always been, but were not regarded “aesthetically”.”(16) Dissanayake said that even though artists work for god and their religion, they still represent and use standards of beauty, harmony and excellence. Art has common point in different times.

Second theory is  public is more and more important for art. “To artists, as to everyone, the new order…As in 19th century advanced…” (17) People want to learn and find art in everywhere. They became hungry and thirsty for art.

Third theory is great changes weaken people’s attitude and views about art. “What we now call “the Romantic Rebellion” was…” (17) More and more people get changed because of five changes mentioned in  Dissanayake’s essay. New ideas and thoughts towards art and life let people stay away from original life and art.

Unit 3 – what is art for?

The article “What is art for?”, written by Ellen Dissanayake, tried to interpret the history of Western art and  told us the view’s change of people in different time. The most important thing why she written this book is that she wanted to show her own view and experience about art for life’s sake. I deeply agree with her ideas and smart explanation in many parts. however, I still have some question about her article and views about art.

Ellen said that “…hence is relative, even discardable, it should not be forgotten that the arts have always been with us. So have ideas of beauty, sublimity, and transcendence, along with the verities of the human condition: love, death. memory, suffering, loss, desire, reprieve, and hope.”(26) She wanted to tell people arts are always been with people and people can always figure out where the arts are in their lives. No matter where you live or what difficult things you have to face, you can always keep moving with arts.

The following paragraph, Ellen strengthened her ideas “…there is valid and intrinsic association between what humans have always found to be important, and certain ways —called the arts —that they have found to manifest, reinforce, and grasp this importance.” (26) She developed her claims that the importance of found arts. Looking from her words about arts, we can know that her attitude is positive and optimistic. People who get suffering read and know her ideas about arts, he or she may get stronger against difficulty.

However, the world is not as beautiful as what Ellen said. Sometimes, people could not find his own value though arts. When some one do criminal or immoral things, it will be never found its value and art. If people who died because of his crime about killing others, his death will just be the death. We definitely cannot figure out its value It is easy to break what her ideas before like death.  So I have to ask: Does everything have its value or art even though people spit on it?

Unit 2 – 3rd post

After reading my partner’s comment, I realized many points that I missed. The four basic modes which can help people to recognize and find values are really good for us just like I mentioned in my 1st post. I ignored the importance of two major synthetic mental modes. After I reading the article again, I realized that both of these two modes are necessary for us to know values. As we know, if something shows up, people want to give it a definition for its existence. Authority and “science” are used to definite things from a different perspective. They help each other to make up their short parts. People always do what they want. They want to admit something for its existence and reality. Just like my partner said”We can’t help but question theories, and keep questioning them until the facts are proven.” Although people can definite things, they cannot give and set their values. Everything has its own sense, it means different meanings for different people.

Unit 2 – 1st post

According to the article, “A Question of Values: Six Ways We Make the Personal Choices That Shape Our Lives”, the writer said that how can we arrive at these evaluations and beliefs if values are freely chosen by them. Are the four basic modes of developing values truly complete? Are there really no others?

I completely agree with his four basic modes which can help people to recognize and find values. Just like the writer said “These modes not only describe how we approach things in general , they also describe how we develop and choose values.”(page 11) In sense experience, we can learn knowledge through our eyes, ears, noise, skin and tongue to feel and understand our world and values. For example, while I did not know the cheese cake’s taste and just knew that it must be delicious because I always saw people in TV eating cheese cake with smile face, I had a taste with cheese cake  in US finally, I have to say it is not the value what I want. I use my eyes to see TV to get first impression and use my tongue to make sure my first feeling and its value to me. I think different things have its value to different people. Sometimes I also use other basic modes to find values. Even though I do not know what the meaning of “vegetarian” and just know the meaning of “vegetable”, I still prove that word is related with vegetable because I use logic mode. Other basic modes are also useful to understand values.

I am not sure that there are really no other modes, but I am sure that I use these four modes that mentioned before to develop values is enough for me. People can discuss the way to find values and its balance.

My first post at 2014

I really love Houston Rockets! Even though sometimes they played not good, James Harden still keep carrying the whole team. Several days ago, Rockets just took an ugly game against Knicks in a 102-100 victory. Harden got scoring 37 points and carrying Rockets all the night! I really love him!
