Unit 9 – Remix

After watching Lawrence Lessig’s TED talk, I realized that creativity has been facing difficult problem with laws. He talked about three stories about how laws effected creativity. He thought that if government or laws always limit people’s creativity to protect some companies’ profit, our kids will be hard to get creativity. Lawrence Lessig gave his ideas about how to balance laws and culture. The first idea is that artists and creators embrace the idea and choose that their work be made available more freely. The second idea is that we need the business that are building out this read-write culture to embrace this opportunity expressly, to enable it. However, I have a question about his ideas:”How to persuade government to do so?Even though people watch something illegal, they still easily get what they want through the internet. Why we must promote his ideas ?”

    Jack,
You may be looking at this all wrong. We need the government to loosen its grip on those who do not have the means to purchase all these songs, videos, or shows. Maybe we do have the money but that’s not the point. The point is the government is monitoring people’s computer use and frequency of use. I’ve heard of a guy who was fined $10,000 for illegally downloading music from LimeWire. That alone scared me so much that I never dare went to the site even though some of my friends encouraged me to do so. The government needs to take a step back and allow this to happen since downloading is happening all the time and will never stop.

      HI!Alex!
After reading your comment, I realized that I was wrong about attitude towards to illegal creativity or something. Different countries made it different. In my country, authority is not so important to us. Because we can download all music or something for free. It sounds unbelievable to you. I should change my ideas about it because US is such a country that different from my country. For individual, I am happy that I can download anything for free. For country or productor, it should use law to limmit this.
