Artifact: Unit 08 Art, Game, and Technology Research
In the reading “Computer Graphics: Effects of Origins,” the thesis is that the development of technology has interacted with the development of art significantly in the history. The author Jones introduces that computer graphics pushed the development of art in the history. As she suggests, “New forms of art and technology are frequently cast in the mode of old forms, just as other aspects of material and symbolic culture have been…I hope to establish the relation of specific image, object event, or environment to conceptual frames. These frames exist within art and technology and are present in other forms of symbolic and material culture” (Jones, 21).
One historical example that Jones introduces is the “electronic and photonic art forms.” “Electronic and photonic art forms have been and will continue to be influenced by their origins and practices” (Jones, 21). This example shows that technology generated a new kind of art form which is electronic and photonic art form.
Related to today’s culture, I think the best illustration of Jones’ thesis is the movie industry. Movie always is considered as a kind of art form and its development is highly relative to the technological development. There is an article that I found online which is ‘9 tech innovations that changed the film industry (through the ages)’ by Ronan Steyn. In this article, Steyn mainy introduces nine innovation of technology and how these technological innovations force the development of film, such as movie camera, green screen, portable equipment, and so on. As he argues, “One industry that has been expansively affected by technological changes is film. Both mechanical and digital innovations have influenced everything from equipment to distribution, changing how films are made and the manner in which we consume them” (Steyn, 2013). I believe that most of us can felt the changes of movies in the past decade. During the past decade, there are many blockbusters be produced based on advanced technology, like IMAX, 3D, and so on. Because of these advanced technology, our experience of watching a movie is becoming more and more exciting and wonderful.
Reflection:
This assignment helped me to understand how technology influence art and society through course reading and researches. In the reading “Computer Graphics: Effects of Origins,” Jones has stated that “New forms of art and technology are frequently cast in the mode of old forms, just as other aspects of material and symbolic culture have been…I hope to establish the relation of specific image, object event, or environment to conceptual frames. These frames exist within art and technology and are present in other forms of symbolic and material culture” (Jones, 21). Therefore, technology has the ability to develop art and develop out society.
The best example to respond Jones statement is the development in movie industry. Because of the advancing in technology, artists could do the arts that they could not do before. The development of technology and artists’ skill provide audiences a better visual experience. People no longer need to watch black and white movies. The following video is the trailer of San Andreas which is the movie I watched just in last week. I feel amazing about its realistic scene. I know that is made of computer graphics but it is difficult to distinguish the real scene and the computer scene. The computer graphics make this movie become amazing.
Future Intentions:
In the future, I want to study more about high technology art becuase I am really interested in it. When I see the arts that people created by computer, I feel it is a really amazing thing. I hope the 3D printing technology can become more practical in the future so people can print out things that they created through computer.
