Artifact 8:Remixing Culture

remix

Objective:

– Become acquainted with copyright as a historic, cultural, and economic paradigm and its value and pertinence to creative works
– Examine their own and others values and paradigms of ownership and authorship of cultural media
– Evaluate the meanings of real and fake and examine their intersection with personal and cultural identity and authenticity

ORIGINAL POST:

The video “Laws That Choke Creativity”  presented by Lawrence Lessig. He argues that  mass of laws could restrict creativity. Using others might cause the act of piracy and breaking copyright laws .However, the internet makes life easier, enriching knowledge on Internet library, creating novels based on others ideas and etc. I always feel that a good idea should be motivated by what he saw or heard instead of just thinking. If remixes ideas from others break the law, there will have less creative work. I am thinking it is better to have laws protecting the copyright rather than prohibit remixing.

REFLECTION:

It is an interesting topic because it matters us closely. With the development of technology and Internet,  people can obtain copies of people’s work very easily without any permission. However, the point is that it is hard to define copying ideas and creating ideas based on others. As I mentioned before, “a good idea should be motivated by what he saw or heard instead of just thinking.”, I think if remixing ideas is illegal, there will have less creative impressions.

FUTURE:

I am looking for more sane laws on remixing culture. No one can imagine the influence that remixed will bring us and furthermore, I believe an open-minded will allow us to find more interesting innovations and as the same time bring back to work and life.
