Personal Adornment

#First person

I saw an interesting man when I was studying in the first floor of library. He has long brown hair and “unkempt looking” (but it is clean) and  nicely trimmed moustashes. He wears fringed leather vest and  hip huggger, bell bottom jeans with wide leather belt. Shaking his body while singing at leisure.  I think he is a typical hippie in America, leading a enjoyable life and following his own life rules. I feel like he is a cheesy guy who cares more about the happiness than money. He can do whatever he likes no matter the art painting or truck driver. Besides,my first assumption is that  he might not be a student in UO because he looks over 40 years old and he just checking books about music history in the library when I  glanced to him unconciously.

#Second person

A beautiful girl came into my eyes when I ahead to Duck store at noon. She wears a exqusite makeup which gives a complete coverage for all kinds of skin imperfections.  Wearing a khaki color coat and fashion shirt inside, black knee boot and a delicate handbag makes her like a pretty lady boss. I am thinking she is a Chinese girl who comes from an affulent family because Asian girls are good at fashion in school instead of the simple sporty hoody among the American students. And she has a traditional round face  with a pair of intense eyes. She is serious about her academic work as I heard she is making a appointment with advisor afternoon. And my assuption is correct when I heard she speak Chinese with her friend in front of the Duck store. It will not happens a lot that Chinese people  love to have body piercing and exaggerated tatoo  in obvious position.

#Third person

The third individual is the one I met on the way to the gym. I saw a sunshine young man wearing a pair of running shoes, shorts and sport T shirt which is the typical American student in my mind. In my point of view, American boys love doing sports and weight exercise, which make them look more strong and handsome. The man probably has a positive emotion towards the life, which will not only makes them excellent in sports but also on relationship and study.  Because the one who loves sport  has the  belief standing out of the crowd.

In sum, it looks like we live in a colorful world with different kinds of people. It makes our lives harder to some extent because we have to learn how to get along well with different characteristics. However, we can summary some features by the outside adornment because people dress in a certain way to convey what they want to be seen by others. Like McShane mentions that “My parents- everytime I come home with something new, they are freaked out. That shock factor probably has a lot to do with. I love watching the reaction” (1995 p.2D).

Is food art?

Elizabeth Telfer points out that food is art in his article from the perspectives of aesthetic reactions first. He mentions that “there can be aesthetic reaction to tastes and smells, be visual aesthetic experience connected with foodstuffs ” and ” the non-neutral, vivid and non-instrumental reaction to taste and smells can be combined with a judgment for which the judger claims objectively (p.11). So it can be explained that we have vivid reactions on the pretty dishes, for they are art themselves and it will resonate the preference from people’s inherent perspective. However, Elizabeth also argues that eating may not be a art of food, appreciation of arts need understanding (p.24).  The similar opinion can be found in Ellen Dissanayake’s theory that art interpretation means that individual experience the world by their own cultural appreciation and sensibilities  from the point of postmodernism,(Dissanayake, 1991, p19). So if just eating, it can not be an art of food. In my point of view, food are absolutely artistic value if the food contains the emotional information like the best wishes for farewell or birthday.  And art is part of our lives, and food is the easiest art that we can understand without any practice understanding. And when talking about the food, it can not be avoided talking about chefs.A good chef is often a good artist and psychologist, they will not just cook as they are asked to  but to try new dishes both on the taste and appearance. The creative chefs often provide profound value on the food, which makes the food having more aesthetic perception. I was impressed by a chef worked in a 5 star restaurant in Beijing, he made the kong pao chicken very tasty. A little bit spicy with red pepper, exquisite meat and  delicate carved flower on the plate, the dish is kind of like a art product made by the artistic chef. So there is no doubt that food is art because it took  the serious design and effort  to create such a aesthetic dinner.

Essay assignment

1 Paleoanthropsychobiological  is an adjective that suggest art includes human history, human culture and psychology and art could be viewed as an inherent universal trait of human species.

2  Dissanayake uses the phrase “making special” showing the importance of art, not mean making the art but playing vital role in participants of the ceremony. Making special keep people closer and emotions will connect a culture and pass through the history. Human can survive if they continue make things special because it allows their offspring understand their experience and following their track.

3 In eighteenth century, there are few changes. First, a gradual secularization of society, people are more likely pursuing happiness. And focus on reason as the means of understanding life. And for the postmodernism, art is interpretation for art is a way reflecting the thinking of people. And for the modernism, art is ideology, for concerning people taste and beauty.

Unit 3 -1st post What is Art?

The article written by Ellen Dissanayake concerns different kinds perspectives of “Art”. She mentioned first that “art must be viewed as an inherent universal trait of human species”. That means art is kind of behavior that developed through the life no matter the sex, sociability, race and etc (p.2). Living in different culture shape the characters distinguished from others for sure. Then she moves to consider the art by the development of western concept of art. The progression of art developed through the time based on religion, politics and imagination of whatever they could imagine. There were less and less limitations on the development of art. And I can not agree any more about the ideas that Postmodernism implied -Art as Interpretation, which not only reflects the unique knowledge but also the upper views like our social institution, the assumptions of individual owns. Art interpretation also means that individual experience the world by their own cultural appreciation and sensibilities. I personally love Postmodernism for the freedom of art. And art is not related with finishing the work but making the work.  What’s more, it is worth thinking “Art for Life’s Sake”. “To begin with art was not for its own sake at all, but for the sake of the performance of ritual ceremonies “.We can not live without art. “It was emotional bonding of the participants that gave the ceremonies survival value. The making special, the touching of or entering an interesting realm that encouraged and allowed self-transcendent emotions tied together”(p.10).  The more human life complex, the more arts complex as well which is the charm of the art. And art is a behavior that will make people special and more accessible to the real world. In sum, art is not just a piece of work but the creation of life. Besides, art reflects the human demands to be promoted and nourished without ending.

Life Values Assessment

Step1

The order list is from the most important to least important: creativity health family loyalty  leadership prestige friendship  wisdom security independence personal development personal accomplishment power wealth expertness community integrity service location

Step2

I did workout at gym and homework with my friends at library today, which makes me feel enriched. I pursue the healthy and enjoyable lifestyle.

My parents taught me to be a loyalty person from my early age, which does not matter with  grade or appearance. Loyalty is also the most important requirement for me to make friends. No one wants to make with those people who say bad words behind you. And being a loyalty person will be valid  throughout my life. Besides, my parents love doing sports and they often tell me the importance of health. You will lose confident and energy without healthy body. So that I have good habit doing exercise, which will follow my whole life I believe. And as for the goals, I want to improve my leadership skills most. It is useful in the future job no matter what concentration you focus on. However, I feel a little shy communicate with others though I have something to share. I feel like I should be more confident.

1st Post-Values Discussion

It is very interesting to start AAD250 with the topic “Values”. As for me, values could just be an abstract and intangible concept at first. It is hard to define what the values is and whether is useful for us.

With the considerable reading, I started to regard values as an issue, which related with many factors like culture, instinct, religion and etc. As for the author, he mentioned that although the term values is dismissed as a barbarous jargon, people use it frequently depend on personal evaluations and related beliefs (Lewis, p.5). I agree with the idea and it is totally true because we are notisolated unity in the world but are influenced by the community surrounded. People are good at imitating and learning, so it is anatural process to be effected by features like customs and living habits. However, I can not accept with the idea that author disagree individual human beings are programmed into their values, either by the influence of genes on personality or social pressure (Lewis, p.6). Although it is hard to prove the proposition by statistics and experiment, it can be explained by an obvious example. Comparing the family values between American and Chinese, I heard a story from my American friend, themainstream American family are more likely to be independent. Children will pay themselves for the tuition when they go to college and they will not live with their parents and care for them after they are married .But it happens differently in China. Those people who are not support their parents when they are old are condemned by the society. It can be explained by the different family values and it is hard to explore the reason why there are different situation between two country, but it has been back less than history. And it maybe programmed into values and genes may play vital roles for forming the value.
