Throughout the article regarding spirituatlity, it gives the audience a basic understanding between what it means to “see” something in comparison to “looking” at something. The phrase seeing has a lot deeper meaning towards its real definition when the article explains by stating, “Seeing occurs when our attention is arrested by a person, object, or scene. Our mind stops chattering and pays attention. We see boht the shape of the thing and its meaning to us. We are drawn out of our isolated, self-absorbed state” (72). Rather than just passing by something and looking at it like its something one might observe on the regular, “seeing” indicates that the object we are observing is something that catches our attention and is something that we find enough interest in to take time and look at it deeper than anything else we would find normal. The article sets a good example of an event that would make someone see something rather than look at something would be something like an event on the news that rarely ever happens.
The article later goes on by linking the term seeing and how that relates to artist. The article goes on by later stating that artist believe in seeing things becasue it finds a deeper meaning within that particular object. Recognizing something and finding a deeper meaning towards that particular object will often lead to influence the artist for their particular art piece. “Seeing determines every aesthetic decision. First, artists see their subject, which inspires them to create. Then there are the technical aspects of seeing, such as an accurate analysis of the formal relationships that the artist wishes to express. Next comes a critical translation phase, where the art-making hand dialogues with the seeing mind…Seeing is also the recognition of meaning.
I believe that the article statement about how seeing different objects rather than looking at those same objects, gives humans a wide variety of influences within themselves. Wether it be something terrifying happening, like the example of how the author saw his family in an accident, or just something out of the ordinary like a particular art piece, it makes the viewer have different feelings at that particular moment. It is then that particular feeling that the person may be feeling make them either love what they are seeing or terrified of what they are seeing.
Hi Tyler, I’m Binglu. I were read your post, I agree with your comment in the post, such as “I believe that the article statement about how seeing different objects rather than looking at those same objects, gives humans a wide variety of influences within themselves.” You were follow author idea and I believe tha tyou were thinking deeper than me about “seeing” and “looking”. However, I have different idea about meaning of these two words. In my opinon, if I were mention word “seeing” that means the things that I see is relate closest to me or my daily life, If I were mention “looking” that mens the things maybe not connect to me, I just see it and do not care about it. People always have different idea about one thing, I think both your and my idea is useful.
