Artifact 9: Public Art

Objectives:

  • Explore the public funding on arts.
  • Examine public art’s role in capturing history and place-making.
  • Explore the relationship of cultural calues to civic dialogue, beautification and identity.

Reflection:

Public art is considered to be a piece of art that is displayed in a public area for people to appreciate. Some of us often take it for granted and seldom attach much importance to its existence. Doss states, “public art embodies the ideas, initiatives, and inspirations of America’s many publics.”(P. 2) It represents the public’s freedom of expression which is rather essential for humanity. In recent years, due to an active art market, arts sponsorship gradually into the mainstream. public art can beautify the space and enhance the corporate image while the state of art have tax concessions. The rapid expansion of the art market now, we can even call it a revolution, so more and more people are concerned about the arts, there are more and more money flows into the art market.

Art’s gradually flexible environment is the trend of social development since the development of increasingly liberal arts environment, and it is the requirement of artistic freedom.  I think art needs a flexible social environment, because the spirit of artistic freedom. Flexible artistic environment, not only is the artist and art critic also create great works of art.

In the future:

Public arts using direct way and sometime even controversial method to express their understandings about the art. It may not be wildly accepted, but the spirits contained to the art which is brave and creative is really impressive. I think I will support or even follow the public art in the future
