Artifact 5: Horror
Objectives:
- Analyze the value and beauty of horror art.
- Explore the impact of horror art on individuals and society
Reflection:
Horror has great artistic stimulation, which uses people’s curiosity and desire of the unknown to create a large market value. People are attracted by these arts with special features which promotes cognitive curiosity. Telfer states, “Thus, to a large extent, the horror story is driven explicitly by curiosity. It engages its audience by being involved in processes of disclosure, discovery, proof, explanation, hypothesis, and confirmation.” (P.279) People are afraid of unknown things, and horror art evokes audiences’ interest, especially the horror movies. People would like to spend time on horror movies, novels and so on, because horror evokes their curiosity and people’s curiosity creates the market value. Horror movie is popular because horror helps us face our fears, horror has lasting Impact and horror creates economic value.
There is an example of horror movie called The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. This movie shows that it’s much normal for human beings to kill cattle without feeling guilty or feeling sympathy because people take it for granted. However if people are killed as easily as cattle, the senses and reasons typical of human beings seem not right and unacceptable. Since all animals are equal, people should consider and treat other lives mercifully and equally, not dominating others lives recklessly just because people are so-called masters of the world. Horror art explores some truth the public ignored and makes us think about it.
In the future:
Horror movie deeply remind me to think about that who I am and what am I doing. Human beings are so strong to concern the disasters, but we are as same as others creatures on the earth.
