Artifact 3: Food as Art

Objective:

  • Explore the meaning and influence of food as an artform
  • Consider culture difference refer to food

Reflection:

It is the first time to think food as art, and it is really interesting. According to the article, “The essence of the process [of duplication] is that it enables an artist to produce many copies of one work. Since we can call each engraving a work of art, we can call each pie a work of art, at least in the classifying sense,” (Tefler, 17) Art brings enjoyment to the audience, and it just like the food could also bring amazing experiences to the audience. Food may be physically satisfy people, but  enjoying the delicious food equals to enjoying a piece of beautiful art work. When we ingest food at that moment, our hearts must be very pleasant. Like a work of art, such as painting could give us sensory experience like food did. Therefore, the food is a work of art.

Comparing to art, food may have a greater relationship with culture. No matter what corner of the world, almost every festivals in many countries and food are related. For example, people eat dumplings during Chinese New Year,  Americans eat turkey during Thanksgiving. In traditional Chinese culture, the food and culture influence each other. In Western countries, even people eat different foods, the food is part of the culture. For example, families gather together to eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day. Different cultures have different eating habits, but there are a lot common in different culture.

In the Future:

I am going to eat food with enjoying attitude, because I believe that I will feel more about life.
