New Alt-Ac Resource: For the Lost Creative

Wondering what to do with your extensive education in performing arts that isn’t performing or teaching? This is the resource for you! Launched by Creative Baggage in September 2022, For the Lost Creative is a curated database of free opportunities for folks in the arts with the goal of encouraging collaboration over competition in creative fields. This includes interdisciplinary scholarships, grants, jobs, internships, workshops, and so forth that can be filtered to your needs.

Apply to the SEM Ethnomusicology Mentoring Program!

Hey THEME people! Consider applying for professional mentorship through SEM and learn more about your desired career path. See below for more information on the program and applications from SEM:

SEM is pleased to announce Year Two (2023) of its Public Ethnomusicology Mentoring Program. As was the case in 2022, this program will pair individual senior colleagues working in public/applied ethnomusicology with individual early-career colleagues interested in pursuing similar professional paths outside the academy. Mentors will be available for one-on-one consultations with their mentees monthly or every other month during 2023. To apply to the program as a mentee, please visit the Public Ethnomusicology Mentoring Programpage on the SEM website and submit a brief application form and letter of interest. The deadline for applications is April 1, 2023. SEM expects to select six mentees for the 2023 year.

Call for Proposals: 2023 CCLAS Graduate Student Research Grant

Apply for an Internship with the College Music Society!

The College Music Society is offering a variety of internships in arts administration in the next year. Read below to see if one of these might be right for you:

 

 

‍2023-2024 STUDENT INTERNSHIPS

 

The College Music Society is excited to announce internship opportunities for students interested in acquiring arts administration experience and learning about the challenges and rewards of working in a non-profit environment.

  • Internships are remote.
  • Internships are unpaid.

The following internships are available for the 2023-2024 academic year:

 

College Music Symposium Production Assistant — Internship runs from June 1, 2023–May 31, 2024. Start and end dates are flexible within a few weeks. The Production Assistant will work with CMS staff and Symposium editors to produce two volumes of the scholarly journal during the year of internship. Main duties will include transferring articles from print to online format, creating a print version of each volume in PDF format, and creating and submitting DOIs (digital object identifiers) with CrossRef.org.

 

Airtable Projects Assistant — Internship is project-based, so working hours are flexible within the time frame of established projects. Work may take place in summer only, academic year only, or both. Airtable is a modern spreadsheet tool with database functionalities and is used as a platform for building collaborative applications. This internship will require learning and mastering the software, creating new projects in Airtable, and importing data from older applications into existing Airtable bases.

 

Events Assistant(s) — Internship(s) begin May 1, 2023, requiring work both in the summer and the academic year. Internship(s) conclude following administrative wrap-up of events. Travel to the CMS National Conference in Miami, FL from October 25-29 may be required. (Travel expenses paid by CMS.) Travel to CMS/NAMM GenNext at the NAMM Show in January 2024 may be required. (Travel expenses paid by CMS.) Multiple administrative tasks prior to events may include working in software platforms Webex and Kubify (training provided, as needed). Additional internship projects may be developed upon agreement between the intern and CMS staff.

 

Social Media Assistant — Internship runs from mid-May, 2023 through mid-May, 2024. Start and end dates are flexible within a few weeks. The Social Media Intern will work with the CMS Staff to manage CMS social media platforms Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) fellowship program provides opportunities for doctoral candidates to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. The program is designed to deepen research knowledge and increase the study of modern foreign languages, cultural engagement, and area studies not generally included in U.S. curricula. 

 

Program features

Students may request funding to support overseas research for a period of no less than six months and no more than 12 months. Funds support travel expenses to and from the residence of the fellow and the country or countries of research; maintenance and dependent allowances based on the location of research for the fellow and his or her dependent(s); an allowance for research-related expenses overseas; and health and accident insurance premiums. Projects may focus on one or more of the following geographic areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (excluding the United States and its territories).

 

Eligible applicants

Institutions of higher education (IHEs) in the United States are eligible to apply for grants under this program. As part of the application process, eligible students submit their individual research narratives and application forms to their home IHE. The IHE compiles all eligible individual student applications for inclusion in the institutional application that is submitted to the U.S. Department of Education (Department). A student is eligible to receive a DDRA fellowship from their IHE if they:

  • Are a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States.
  • Are a graduate student in good standing at an IHE.
  • Are admitted to candidacy in a doctoral degree program in modern foreign languages and area studies at that institution when the fellowship period begins.
  • Are planning a teaching career in the United States upon completion of their doctoral program.
  • Possess sufficient foreign language skills to carry out the dissertation research project.

How to apply

The U.S. Department of Education’s International and Foreign Language Education office (IFLE) expects to make 90 new awards totaling approximately $3.8 million under the fiscal year (FY) 2023 DDRA program competition. The FY 2023 application is available online through the Department’s G5 system between Feb. 10 and April 11.

Application technical assistance webinar and web chat

IFLE will post a prerecorded technical assistance webinar on its YouTube channel on Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. (Eastern Time) to help students and institutions learn more about the 2023 DDRA program and how to apply. Please subscribe to IFLE’s YouTube channel and check periodically for updates.

 

In addition to the webinar presentation, IFLE will host a live web chat to answer specific applicant questions. There will be a LIVE Question & Answer Session hosted by DDRA staff on March 8 3-4:15 p.m. (Eastern Time). All potential applicants are welcome to attend the live session by clicking the following link: Join the Live Q & A Session on Microsoft Teams. Attendees should ensure they have viewed the prerecorded webinar ahead of the live question and answer session.

In order to encourage and support interdisciplinary graduate student research in the areas of Latinx and Latin American Studies, CLLAS announces a program for summer research support. We expect to award up to three summer grants for $3,000 each to advance research for either master’s or doctoral candidates.
