I believe that the thesis of this reading is that art and technology are connected and constantly growing and changing together. For example, Jones says, “Changes in the form of this medium (computer graphics) have been dramatic and rapid. These changes are not simply technical effects. They contribute to maintenance and change of culturally conditioned conceptual patterns in the larger cultural historical context. By reviewing specific works… I hope to establish the relation of specific image, object, event or environment to conceptual frames” (Page 21). This is explaining how art and technology are connected. They influence each other and they both reflect and follow patterns of culture.

One example that Jones presents is as follows: “Electronic and photonic art forms have been and will continue to be influenced by their origins and practices” (Page 21). This example shows how technology will always be influenced by its origins and practices. It also shows how art and technology just continue to become more and more connected. This example helps the readers to better understand Jone’s thesis.

In today’s culture, there are so many ways that art and technology are connected. For one, nowadays people can actually make art by using technology. There is software on computers that allow people to “draw” or “paint” on their computer and create pieces of art. In addition to this, people can view and appreciate works of art online. Before computers, art could only be seen in museums or galleries. Now you can view almost any work of art online.

Reflection:

I felt that this assignment was very relevant in today’s society. This assignment really caused me to “examine the role of technology as a force for cultural maintenance and change”. I always knew that technology was a major force in driving society forward, but this assignment really opened my eyes to this idea.

This assignment also caused me to learn about the history of computer graphics. I use a computer every single day but never think about all the work behind it. This assignment was very interesting in the way that it helped me to learn about the graphics and history behind technology.
