WoW, Just Save the World Then

Despite the fact that World of Warcraft players had logged nearly 6 million years of playtime by 2010, the only thing that appears to have been produced during this time was a feeling of satisfaction to those who play. Jane McGonigal claims that online gamers are characterized by their urgent optimism, social fabric, blissful productivity, and epic meaning. However, it should be obvious that similar emotions can be produced in real-life situations. Do you think that these feelings are simply a watered down version of what one would feel if she or he were to experience similar events in real life?

  1. Hi, Stephanie, I totally agree with your states that :” urgent optimism, social fabric, blissful productivity, and epic meaning should be obvious that similar emotions can be produced in real-life situations. ” I do think that these feelings are simply a watered down version of people who experience similar events in real life. However, this watered down version is extremely different to the real world because game players only need to use fingers to achieve their goals and become a “virtuoso.” In fact, the same kind of goals would not achieve by just using computers except people who are creating new technology like Bill Gates. So I think Jane McGonigal only stand in her position to describe how to make more and more people play games but she skip some real situation skillfully by cite some famous examples.

Hi Stephanie, your question is very realistic. Sometimes, people are really into games and they cannot tell the difference between the real world and the game world. Some news says that people become with more violence and they may hurt people around them. Even those people are many, it does exist and can be controversial topic for some game design with bloody screen. And since she is a game designer, so sometimes, they do ignore the game addiction. She said it is good for those people who play a short time each day. But the addiction of game is still a problem for the young generation and I think it will become more harder to solve since the game design is more fantasy and more attractive in the technology world.
