Minimum Qualifications:

• An earned doctorate in Deaf Education or related field. ABD may be considered. • Demonstrated excellence or potential for excellence in scholarship • Demonstrated excellence or potential for excellence in university level teaching • Three years minimum successful teaching in P-12 educational settings with children and youth who are deaf or hard of hearing. • Evidence of a comprehensive d/Dhh teaching philosophy

Preferred Qualifications: • Experience teaching graduate students in online distance modalities. • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students and colleagues with broadly diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds in educational, research or other work activities. • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language at an intermediate or higher level.

Special Education Doctoral Intern Opportunity

The Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) Parent Program has a specific need for at least one doctoral intern for our program area. This summer, OSEP along with our Parent Technical Assistance Centers will be undertaking a project focused on improving equity in outreach and services delivered by Parent Centers. In order to help us launch this project, we are interested in an intern with:

  • Experience in literature reviews, both research and policy;
  • Knowledge and interest in equity and family engagement; and
  • Skills in written and oral presentation.

The ideal intern will also have initiative to make the most of this opportunity in collaboration with OSEP mentor and our dynamic and engaged Parent Program team.

2. Study Title: Effects of Simulated Play Date on Parent Use of Strategies to Promote Social Skills in Children with Autism

3. Phase of study: Recruitment, follow-up, and data analysis as of Fall 2015.

4. Population or age group:Triads including children ages 3-7 with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), their parent, and a typically-developing peer.

5. Summary:This study employs a non-concurrent multiple baseline single case design to train parents of children with autism to uses strategies to promote social skills during a simulated play date. The intervention package consists of strategies to prevent challenging behavior (e.g., social story, visual supports), specific techniques (environmental arrangement and prompting) to increase turn taking and language during game play with a peer, and strategies to reinforce appropriate social skills. Generalization to the home setting is assessed to evaluate the efficacy of this clinic-based, simulated approach
