Produce Department

When Rachel Abrams grew up in Virginia, she didn’t have much experience with GMOs or organic foods. After hitchhiking around, she found herself in Eugene, Oregon where she was introduced to the world of organic foods.  Now a natural grocer with Sundance, Abrams continues to delve into this world. These photos show her contributions to help the store provide organic, non-GMO produce to the market.

Rachel Abrams surrounded by the produce which Sundance works hard to ensure is all organic.

As Abrams adds the proper labeling to the organic lettuce, she explains that labeling produce, “organic,” by USDA standards, means that it has never been genetically modified.

Abrams brings in the organic produce from the OGC truck. OGC, or Organically Grown Company, is a distribution company that brings organically-grown produce in the Willamette Valley from the farm to the produce aisle.

For the other products in the grocery store, such as this Chili Powder, labeling choices are up to the company that produces the item. However, the store still prioritizes products that are either organic or non-GMO.

Manager, Andrea, stops back to check on Abrams and inform her of a delivery. Andrea adds that she prefers the organic label to the non-GMO label because a non-GMO product could still not meet all of the qualifications of being organic.
