I have to say that the public art is the necessary process for current development of art. Such as the Controversy in California: The Baldwin Park Project. “Danzas Indigenas centers on historical and cultural details specific to the location and community of Baldwin Park – a quiet, working-class town nestled in the San Garbriel Valley with a predomi-nantly Lantino population of about 80,000. The details of Danzas Indigenas narrate the story of the region and the community, although it’s a story that some do not want to hear”. I saw this park when I traveled in California. The public art help me understand the city’s development both of art and history. Meanwhile, I like to see the special mark in city such as the Statue of Liberty in New York. It is obsolete public art which symbol of history. The civic is current center cultural expression for human being. The cities life totally influence on people’s life. Thus, the public art connect the art and life story together. It is meaningful for public art to create the history of art in the modern time.
With the development of history and art, art is hard to determine because it is changed by the life’s change. When I first time to see the murals by Arthur and Albert Runquist, I find that they have a good knowledge of history even if they are artists rather than historian. It is the strong background to support their murals to meaningful and great work of art. By analysis of the murals, I find that the two art works named “The Development of Art and “The Development of Science” have different meaning but they have strong connections. The Development of Science has 8 periods in history: Panel 1: Stone Age; Panel 2: Iron Age; Panel 3: Early Egyptian; Panel 4: Greek Period; Panel 5: Renaissance. Panel 6: Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries; Panel 7: Students storing up traditional knowledge and pushing on to new discoveries in physics, chemistry, biology, botany, engineering and geology; Panel 8: Modern Period. It is short but important description for the most important event in each time. The history shows the ability of study for human being is developed from base natural thing of stone to world mystic theory. The The Development of Art told about Panel 1: the Earliest Cave Painting, shaping of earthenware, sewing; Panel 2: Later Primitive Period. Weaving, dyeing, stone carving, pottery, and decoration; Panel 3: Egyptian, Scroll decoration, architect, sculptor, mural painter, builders; Panel 4: Greek Period. Music, drama and the dance; development of the beautiful human figure; Panel 5: Medieval Period. Sculptor, illuminator, church music, stained glass, wood carving; Panel 6: Renaissance, Goldsmith, violin maker, glass blower, and mural painter; Panel 7: Campus development of the arts; Panel 8: Shaw, Padwerewski, Caruso, Bernhardt, Orozoo,– represntative of modern arts. In my perspective, I think The Development of Science shows people’s action which always is the process of study. Otherwise, The Development of Art shows the appreciated about the world base on the known knowledge. Thus, I want to said that the development of science give a strong knowledge for artist to how to create art at same time.
Furthermore, the science is the discovery of the world. As important part in human life, the science must as the important part of culture in human life. As the reading of “A Response to Two Murals told that “The murals raise questions about the retention and display of monuments and artwork in a public setting depicting a history that we may no longer see as worthy of celebration. This project and site include the history and more contemporary responses to the pieces” (Para, 1). The murals shows the history of art to us and we can’t find the knowledge on changed life, only shows on the work and art. The work of art need people to know and development. In the other hand, public art has same function with the two murals. The public art record both history event and the realize for art in that time. Thus, I encouraged that public art is necessary art form in our civic life.
Reflection
Unlike the current community, the Runquist murals could create some controversy because of the common depiction of the white male. Yes, I agree it can be offensive to some but this mural was a depiction of the evolution of the arts and sciences when this was the majority of educated society was the white male. The intention of the artists was never to offend viewers it was just to create a depiction and during that time period this was all they knew. This point relates to the idea of capturing history, which I believe the mural to do a very good job of. The Runquist brothers could not tell the future, they only knew the past and what they had learned through their education so they painted two murals so they portrayed history as they thought it would be, just like any artists during the time would have.
In the furture I will try understand public art deeply, figure out what they can bring to the community.
