Jawsmania

When the movie Jaws hit the silver screen, the world of sharks changed forever. The term “Jawsmania”  was coined by Time magazine after the shock of Jaws left a huge mark on what lurks beneath the waters.

Since then, the idea of sharks has had a more negative connotation when brought up. The fear of the unknown fuels most of this negative energy towards sharks in our opinion. One of the main issues of why there is such a fear surrounding sharks is the fact that there is not an excessive amount of information available. They are very difficult creatures to track and keep tabs on. Their unusual tracks and irregular eating habits lead scientists and biologists all over the map, causing them to hypothesize about all of the truths behind sharks.

Here is the movie trailer for the 1974 original Jaws film.

The specfic word choice and tone surrounding the introduction to the shark has now set the stage for how a handful of media handles and talks about sharks. While it is obvious that sharks are natural predators, they also are meant to do a specific job within the marine animal kingdom. Each creature has its place and purpose for why they exist today.

Sharks have been around since before the dinosaur ages and since then, the hundreds of species have learned to adapt to their surroundings and taught themselves how to live off the resources around them, similar to that of humans.

Here is the iconic theme song that will forever remind people of the horrors that lurk beneath them…
