To the University Senate and my co-workers here today: I wish I could be there in person to thank you from my heart for this award. In my current job I verify and pay bills for everything from large construction projects to small building repairs. It takes the hard work and long-time experience of a lot of staff to keep the University running smoothly. Most of what we do is by its nature ephemeral, and has to be done again and again.
It’s important to remember, whether we’re at the top of the org chart or the bottom, that it’s our efforts combined that have the power to fix things when we see they need fixing, sometimes even with lasting effects. I thank the SEIU Labor Choir for coming to celebrate today by singing to you about that.
This song about labor history was made for participation: you’ll catch on to the pattern right away. We invite you to join in and sing with us if you would like.
