When we think of prestigious scientific awards, the Nobel Prize is the one that probably comes to mind most for those of us in the United States.  However, every year people from all over the world are recognized locally and regionally for their outstanding research achievements and impact. Furthermore, awards are offered many levels.   At the national level one such award is the Nigerian Science Award. Another is the La Academia Nacional de Ciencias Hermann Burmeister Award from Argentine National Academy of Science. On a multinational level, the African Union supports several awards including the Kwame Nkrumah Regional Award.  The L’Oréal Foundation has teamed up with UNESCO to support a science award specifically aimed at women scientists.  Likewise, The Elsevier Foundation Award – Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World does the same. Therefore, The Price Science Commons and I thought it would be good to create an exhibit to showcase a few recent of these winners from the last year.  Here is the list of winners that we posted in our exhibit:

Ikeoluwapo Ajayi (Nigeria) Nigerian Science Award Winner 2017 for work on Malaria

Jane Catherine Ngila (Kenya) Awarded the Kwame Nkrumah Regional Award from the African Union for work on affordable water purification

Tanzima Hashem (Bangladesh) Elsevier Foundation Award – Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World For work on geolocation without loss of personal data

Felycia Edi Soetaredjo (Indonesia) Elsevier Foundation Award – Organization for Women In Science for the Developing World for waste water treatment technology

Camila Navarrete (Chile) L ‘Oréal-UNESCO for Woman in Science For work on assimilation of dwarf galaxies into the Milky Way Galaxy

Matías Pandolfi (Argentina) La Academia Nacional de Ciencias Hermann Burmeister Prize For work on reproduction in indigenous fish

Germaine Djuidje Kenmoe (Cameroon) Elsevier Foundation Award – Organization for Women In Science for the Developing World for Molecular friction and wear

Etheldredra Nakimuli-Mpungu (Uganda) Elsevier Foundation Award – Organization for Women In Science for the Developing World for psychiatric epidemiology on depression
