Objective
- Examine the role of technology as a force for cultural maintenance and change.
- Discuss the validity of art created with the aid of machines.
Reflection
In the post “Art & Technology,” I analyzed the role that technology plays in the modern art world. Technological advances have played an important role in the evolution and diversity of the art world. Think of the camera and it’s evolution from the brownie box all the way to the current DSLR’s. Camera technology has adapted and changed so drastically in the last century. These changes have shaped art and the imagery we associate with certain time periods. The camera is but one example of these changes. In the original post for this unit I chose to look at one of the more recent technologies, 3-D printers.
Unlike the camera, we have yet to see a series of major artistic progressions with the 3-D printer due to it’s expensive nature and recent public release. In the article “Computer Graphics: Effects of Origin,” Beverly Jones makes a statement that, “Scientists and technologists continue to develop the most sophisticated and expensive technology. Few artists have access to this equipment” (p. 23). What we have seen though is once the technology has been developed and gained importance in the scientific community it eventually gets introduction into the artist market. For example, the new Lix pen (seen below) is essentially a miniature 3-D printer pen that can create 3 dimensional drawings. It’s exciting to view this progression and see what will come next for the 3-D printer since it’s at the technical maturity of the analog camera.

All of these ideas and analyses of technology and it’s relation to art help to complete the course objectives listed above. More specifically, technology and it’s transformation to an art medium can act as a force of cultural change within our modern society.
Future Directions
As technology advances art will continue to adapt and utilize new technologies. This unit helped me to learn more about the role technology plays in art. In the future I look forward to learning about and seeing more art and technology merged.
