An American Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving traditions are often passed down generation to generation. In the Johnson family some traditions have been practiced for years, while others are just being formed. For some of them, Thanksgiving is the only time that they will get to see each other that year so it is important that the whole family shows up. The celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday while continuously a very controversial topic, to Americans has become a time to reflect on what is most important to them and what they are most grateful for. For the Johnsons, it symbolizes a time for them to relax, eat good food, and once again feel a closeness with family that may have been missing for some time. Their Thanksgiving rituals expand outside of just the dinner itself, into dessert and even the following day. These traditions are more than just actions and food, they represent the history of the family and the values that they continue to uphold. To others, having German chocolate cake may seem like a regular treat, but in this family it stands for all the celebrations where they have come together to eat this cake and all of the memories and love they have shared over it. Spending the next day outside by the pool may feel like an average day off, but it is one of the few times everyone is allowed to be stress-free and strengthen the relationships with other members. Thanksgiving has grown to mean many things to different families across America, but to the Johnson family, it will always mean the sharing of love and the promise of good food.
