Objectives:
- Become acquainted with copyright as a historic, cultural and economic paradigm and its value and pertinence to creative works.
- Explore the changing nature of copyright in the context of “Remix Culture” and the “Fifth World.”
- Examine your own and others values and paradigms of ownership and authorship of cultural media.
- Evaluate the meanings of real and fake and examine their intersection with personal and cultural identity and authenticity.
Original Assignment:
I chose courage, love, inspiration, tranquility, and creativity.
Reflection:
I thought that this assignment was so much fun because it was really interesting to be able to mix together several different images of all different shapes, sizes and colors to come into one unique image that represents so many different characteristics. I really enjoyed creating my own version of remix culture because I chose 5 different images that I believe are very different, but mesh together in a creative and artistic way.
I completely understand that copying someone else’s work is illegal but it was interesting to see the meanings of real and fake pieces of work and being able to observe their connections with different personal and cultural identities and the authenticity of someone’s work. Lessig even explains that “uncertainty about the freedom to engage in this form of creativity will only stifle the willingness of institutions to help this form of literacy develop” (Lessig pg. 108).
Future Goals:
In the future, I hope that I will truly value the work of other people. Since copyright laws are so important in keeping authentic work real and authentic, I want to be able to actually appreciate the original works of someone who had dedicated so much time and effort into a piece of art.
