Journal #2: Choosing An Artist and Topic for the Final Project

In class, some of my original brainstorms couldn’t be found on the websites I was given. I’m hoping to still look further into the websites and find more artists or artists that are more focused in what I am interested in researching. What I found and the projects I am interested in at the moment are:

1. Louise K Wilson, James (Jim) Flint, and Rob La Frenais’s work in the Investigations of Technological History. Theses contemporary artists look at the cultural and architectural “legacy” of the Cold War nuclear and space programs. The topic itself sounds interesting and similar to the topic I was initially interested in class, but I need more research into what their actual artwork entails. It seems to me like Wilson, Flint, and La Frenais are not artists in the “fine art” sense but they are authors who write about this topic.

2. Florian Bauböck, Irene Posch, and Carles Gutiérrez Valles’s work in genetic engineering and cloning. I think that this is a fascinating topic, however I couldn’t find any links to their actual work outside of a brief blurb describing the medical possibilities of genetic engineering. I’m hoping to look further and find more about the actual artists or any other similar artists that might be doing work about this controversial albeit significant medical advancement.

3. The Critical Art Ensemble’s work in bioweapon research. They are filmmakers dedicated to researching the history and current UK and USA’s involvement with bioweapons and the “paranoia surrounding bioterrorism”. Bioterrorism is the idea that diseases like smallpox and other deadly diseases can be used as weapons to kill entire populations of people. I think it’s an interesting topic, but very narrow and I’m not sure how interested or passionate I am about the theories of bioterrorism.
