Jesus, Son of God

The signs source argues that Jesus performed more than the seven signs mentioned in John. John most likely only included seven signs because seven is the holy number of God. Ehrman points out that this is no coincidence. Of the seven signs, only two are found in other gospels; therefore, there are five new miracles. These new miracles offer new insight into Jesus’s teachings. In addition, they support and more-or-less prove that Jesus is who he claims to be in the prologue of John: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). Here we see his first claim: Jesus is the Word; Jesus is God. This claim is supported throughout the rest of John through Jesus’s signs. In John 4:53, the whole household believed, and the boy was saved. In John 6:14, people believed once they saw the sign. In John 9:3, the signs were a way to reveal God’s works. And in John 9:35-38, knowledge becomes belief. The raising of Lazarus, Jesus’s last sign, is significant because once again it proves Jesus’s earlier claims that he is the Son of God and has the power of God and that through him there is life. Through his signs, he brings people to faith and convinces them to believe.
