Alternative Break Program

Dear Students,

The Service Learning program has now posted participant applications for 2011 Alternative Winter Weekends and 2012 Alternative Spring Breaks. 10-12 student participants will be selected for each trip that will travel to local, domestic and international destinations. Alternative Breaks provide students the opportunity to explore unfamiliar communities and learn about their unique culture and social issues. Each team focuses on service-learning as the vehicle for community engagement. The Alternative Break experience is fun and transformational for everyone. Each participant is involved in pre-trip development and post-trip debrief and reflection.

2011 Alternative Winter Weekend opportunities are as follows:

· Hunger & Homelessness Portland, OR

· Hunger & Homelessness Bend, OR

2012 Alternative Spring Break opportunities are as follows:
· Wild Salmon Restoration Umatilla, OR

· Farm to Table Food Movement Pacific Northwest

· Impact of Urban Poverty on Health San Francisco, CA

· Border Issues & Immigration San Diego, CA

· Youth Empowerment Los Angeles, CA

· Education, Politics and Reform Washington DC

· Youth and Community Development Negril, Jamaica

· Public Health and Sustainability Honduras

StoveTeam International
· Public Health and Sustainability Honduras

Water Brigade
· Cultural Exchange Havana, Cuba

Participant applications are due this Friday, October 28, 2011 by 5pm. Completed applications should be submitted via email to altbreak@uoregon.edu. Click http://serve.uoregon.edu/Students/AlternativeBreaks/ApplicationsForms.aspx to access an application. The application process includes both written application and in-person interview. Interview times to be announced at a later date.
