This is a very interesting approach to learning and assessment. Alverno committed to an “ability-based” learning model that is built on key abilities in:
- Communication
- Analysis
- Problem Solving
- Valuing in Decision Making
- Social Interaction
- Developing a Global Perspective
- Effective Citizenship
- Aesthetic Engagement
Each of these is defined by six behavioral developmental levels. Demonstration of competency in these areas is done through “key performances”, which are experiences or activities that produce artifacts related to one or more of the abilities.
Alverno also operates under an “assessment-as-learning philosophy” that views assessment as part of the learning process in the form of feedback and development.
To support their efforts, Alverno designed and implemented the Digital Diagnostic Portfolio.
