Essay 3, Cool Group Name, Group 6

“Do not hesitate, just communicate”

The behavior of hospital staff who traditionally hold more power, such as surgeons, is critical for the successful use of MICS, due to the increased cooperation required. Therefore, open communication between professionals from different specialties is a necessity. Surgeons, as leaders, should actively encourage others to voice their opinions, ask for clarification, and communicate potential issues without fear of embarrassment (Edmondson, 1439-1440). This will create an environment in which everyone’s expertise will be valued as much as the surgeon’s expertise, allowing them to share any unique information they may have, and leading to better decision-making (Wittenbaum & Park, 72).

“For optimal state, just collaborate”

Hospital staff work under complex, high stress environments and because of this many of the members within these groups have differentiated themselves into experts in specific areas of interest. However, having teams composed of high-expertise members is not sufficient to produce optimal group productivity. Experts’ abilities need to be coordinated through collaborative planning to maximize their effectiveness (Woolley et al., 367). By structuring the team’s efforts, it will optimize members’ contributions and appropriately structure their work to contribute to the team’s collective task (Woolley et al., 368).

“Working with efficiency is key”

Because the special feature of MICS systems where team members need to provide surgeons information shown on different screens, communication failure should be avoided by the largest degree. When communication failure happens, several effects, like inefficiency and team tension, may occur (Lingard et al., 332). Therefore, nurses and anesthesiologists should discuss their preparations with surgeons and operate their parts at the accurate time to reduce occasion and audience failures. For the whole group, each member should respond to others’ questions promptly and provide information that is sufficient, accurate, and informative, so that content and purpose failures become infrequent.

  1. Love the rhyme of the second tip! Very well organized, great use of evidence form the readings.

  2. I really like your second phrase! It is catchy and easy to remember. I also like that you added the efficiency one. I think it was good to point that out that discussing preparations and such will be better overall. I think when it comes to success, people often forget about being efficient with their work as well.
