Food in Vienna!

This past summer I got to spend 2 months in Vienna, Austria on a study abroad program! I was lucky enough to share this experience with 20 other peers of mine. We experienced many life-changing experiences while abroad, but oh boy, was that Dönerdürum the most amazing after a long night out!

This is a Turkish dish, which has been brought over from their homeland. It is similar to a greek-style dish, but has its own distinct Turkish flair. I would give anything to have this dish again, so I looked up a recipe to make it myself!

I thought I should share:

Döner Dürüm

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. ground lamb (or 1/2 lb. each of ground lamb and ground beef)
  • 1 egg
  • 4 cloves garlic (peeled and finely minced)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 rounds of pita wraps
  • 1 cup assorted lettuce
  • 1 large tomato (sliced)
  • 1/2 seedless English cucumber (sliced)
  • 1/4 large red onion (peeled and sliced)
  • Tzatziki sauce or tahini sauce

Steps

  • Pre-heat the oven to 350 F.

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground lamb, egg, garlic, ground cumin, ground coriander, smoked paprika, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper.

  • Place the mixture into a loaf pan and cook in the oven for approximately 30 minutes or until the top is a light golden brown.

  • You can slice the loaf immediately if you like but, for best results, cool completely, wrap in aluminum foil, and refrigerate until firm.

  • To re-heat, add a little olive oil to a large skillet, slice the loaf very thinly and crisp up the slices in the hot pan for a few minutes.

  • Assemble the sandwiches with the vegetables and sauce.

Portillo’s: Chicagoland Staple

Hello all!

I am Mason George Kaseeska and I come from Geneva, IL; A suburb outside of the great city of Chicago! As many know, the culture surrounding food in the Midwest is strong, but Chicago definitely wins the gold medal (; One of the many restaurants keeping the tradition of high-quality Chicago-style food is none other than, Portillo’s!

Looking into Portillo’s past:

Portillo’s was founded by Dick Portillo in Villa Park, IL (1963). The establishment started out as a food cart outside of a grocery store, so Dick could run a hose from there to his cart for running water. My father worked his first job here for Mr. Portillo. He said that the owner was very strict, but that was why he was so successful. He had his eye on the bottom-line and understood the marginal differences in each day’s business activities.

The food consists of what Chicago is known for; Chicago-style dogs and Italian beef sandwiches! Lines inside usually are long and take about 10 minutes to go through. The Driv-Thru is another monster, stretching around the building. Everytime I go home to visit the first place we visit is Portillo’s.

Eventually, he was able to open numerous locations!
