Paola Gicelle Escalante was born and raised in Los Angeles, California before beginning her undergraduate career at the University of Oregon. She is a Senior Public Relations student in the School of Journalism and Communications. With only a year left in her undergraduate, she is preparing to apply for graduate programs in New York City. Paola is interested in pursuing a career in Media Management that could help companies strategically communicate with their audiences through different platforms.
For her Gateway issue, Paola focused on what she is passionate about: animals. The popular debate seen nationwide is adopt vs. shop, yet she chose to do her research on a more sensitive issue that can be sensitive for some. Animal overpopulation is very much present in all shelters. The difference is the method in which these shelters are dealing with hitting max capacity. Due to limited funding and resources, many shelters are faced with euthanizing to free up kennel space. After conducting interviews and doing her own research of the different organizations, Paola understood how important it was to make efforts in rescuing animals who are put into this unfortunate type of situation.
