First WiN journal club examines how to build an inclusive community

ION graduate student Sarah Beyeler (Huxtable Lab) led the first WiN journal club on October 1st. The group read two exciting papers, Diversity begets diversity: a global perspective on gender equality in scientific society leadership by Dominique Potvin et al., and A Tale of Two Sexes by Marian Joëls and Carol Mason. The Potvin et al. paper analyzed factors predictive of gender equity in zoological society leadership boards. The authors found that society culture was the best predictor of gender equity; this society culture model took into consideration aspects such as female representation on leadership boards and whether the society had a visible statement of diversity.

Joëls and Mason are two former presidents of FENS and SfN, and in their NeuroView they discuss the challenges that women face in moving through the ranks of academia and propose ways to increase women’s representation in neuroscience.

There was excellent discussion relating the two papers to how we can create a more positive community both in our labs, as well as in our Institute. Find the two papers and the powerpoint slides on our Resources page!
